Developed by the small studio StarBlade, a classic 2D platformer. Unlike other platformers in which you, most commonly, save the world, Nefarious enables you to take control of a villain who tries to capture the princesses of five kingdoms and defeats hordes of knights and heroes who defend their kingdoms. Gameplay consists of jumping, avoiding obstacles, and of course fighting. However, the main anti-hero is not armed to the teeth.
Nefarious for PC is a classic, 2D platformer by a small studio called StarBlade. The producers never produced a AAA title, but the independent scene may value them for productions like Tadpole Treble and Swapdrop Poker.
Unlike other platformers in which you almost always have to save the world or some damsel in distress, in Nefarious you are the bad guy. Your job is to kidnap the princesses of five kingdoms. While escaping, you need to fight a number of chivalrous knights and warriors who are there to save their princess.
Even though the game’s concepts do not follow the standards of the genre, in reality the title resembles e.g. Mighty No. 9. Gameplay of Nefarious released on PC primarily consists in jumping on heads of the opponents, avoiding obstacles, and, naturally, fighting. The hero is not a marine armed to teeth. Instead, he uses his fists and a grenade launcher that fires different kinds of grenades. Combat with basic enemies is not very demanding. However, it gets hot when reverse boss fights emerge – after all, you are the boss and you need to stop charging enemies with the use of various war engines.
The title by StarBlade features good-looking, 2D visuals, but do not expect the game to look as astonishingly as e.g. Rayman Legends. The locations in Nefarious vary significantly.

Nefarious a very fun game that now finds the perfect home in the Nintendo Switch. With around 5 to 7 hours of gameplay depending on your skill level, this is definitely a great pick for those who love platformers and for people looking for something to shake up their game library.
Cubed3: 3 / 10 by Albert Lichi
Other than the amusing boss battles, Nefarious is barely competent. Controlling bosses from various genres is a novel spin on the concept of the boss battle and if this was just a series of battles, like Cuphead, there could have been something worth playing here. Everything else, which is about 90% of the game, is just soul-crushing. It is the kind of title that feels like work, and continuing is just exhausting because of how poor the playbility is.
Nindie Spotlight: 8 / 10 by Nindie Spotlight
Filled with humor, abundant references to popular franchises, and solid fun Nefarious is a breath of fresh air. Crow’s surface villany is backed by a fair degree of heart and his interactions with the world’s heroes and the princesses he abducts tend to be entertaining for how they play with and subvert expectations. Topping that off with some epic boss fights you’ll generally experience from the other side it simultaneously thumbs its nose at and shows great appreciation for classics we’ve come to know and love. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to take the reigns and help the bad guy win for once it’s a fun ride full of surprises.
