In February 2017, PlatinumGames studio released an action RPG with a slasher-like combat system, titled NieR: Automata. Although the production received an uncommonly warm reception, we had to wait as long as nine years for the announcement of its sequel. In February 2026, we first heard that it would get a sequel.

Series NieR was launched in 2010 by the now-defunct Cavia studio. Subsequent installments of the series were created under the banners of different producers, but all of them were supervised by brand creator Yoko Taro, and published by Square Enix. Keiichi Okabe is responsible for the games' musical settings. NieR is spin-off Drakengard (the authors considered the fifth ending of the first game in the series to be canonical).
