Nightmare Boy

Nightmare Boy is a metroidvania game developed by the independent The Vanir Project and published by BadLand Games.

Plot

Nightmare Boy takes players on a journey to Noctum, a fantasy world conceived by childhood nightmares. When its ruler, Aster, disappeared in mysterious circumstances, chaos reigned throughout the land. The latter is strengthened by the fact that the throne of Noctum was taken over by the self-proclaimed king Balder.

The main character of the game is a boy named Billy, who was imprisoned here like other children. The protagonist's task is not only to save himself and other prisoners, but also to restore the old order in Noctum.

Mechanics

In Nightmare Boy the action is shown from the side perspective. When traveling through a variety of vast locations, players encounter both friendly and neutral characters as well as various enemies (led by powerful bosses). While the latter should be eliminated by making use of various combat skills, the former include the inhabitants of Noctum, as well as other children that can be saved. It is worth doing this, because in return protagonist's companions share their stories and bestow their powers on Billy. This allows the protagonist to face ever-increasing dangers over time and to get to previously inaccessible places; during his adventure, the hero learns to perform double and triple jumps, among other things. During the game, players earn jewels - it is worth saving them, because saving the game in one of the checkpoints requires payment of a certain number of them. In addition, collectibles play an important role, because it depends on them, which end of the game we will see.

Technical aspects

Nightmare Boy has 2D visuals kept in cartoon-like style and gloomy colors. It is complemented by a soundtrack composed by Vica Hernanda.
