No Plan B is a tactical strategy game that allows you to command a special forces unit. The game was developed independently by Sebastien Dubois, the developer known for Gladiabots, as a one-man studio GFX47.

Mechanics

In No Plan B, the player's task is to create tactical plans for special forces soldiers. Our role ends with the start of the operation. When the subordinates go into action, we can only passively watch them execute our orders; we do not have the ability to give commands during action.

The game offers an extensive interface for creating tactical plans. Not only can we plan the soldiers' moves in detail, but also synchronize their actions by arranging them on a timeline. The squad members are not mindless - they have their own intelligence and can react to a limited extent to the situation on the map. However, without a good plan they have no chance of survival. A key role is also played by selecting operators for a given mission and assigning them appropriate equipment.

The main pros of the game

  • Unique Concept: Players appreciate the novel idea of planning missions in detail and then watching the execution unfold. The tactical planning aspect is seen as a fresh twist in the genre.
  • Satisfaction in Execution: When plans work out, players find it satisfying to see their strategies come to life in cinematic replays.
  • Variety of Game Modes: The game offers multiple campaign modes, including challenging roguelike elements and different factions, which add to its replayability.

The main cons of the game

  • Inability to Adapt: A major criticism is the game's design that locks players into their initial plans without the ability to adjust during execution. This can lead to frustrating outcomes where a single mistake can ruin an entire mission.
  • Unpredictable AI: Users have noted that both enemy and squad AI can behave unpredictably, which detracts from the strategic element and often leads to frustrating experiences.
  • Time Investment vs. Reward: Planning missions can take a considerable amount of time, and if a mission fails, players feel their effort was wasted, as they cannot replay the same map layout.
  • Technical Issues: Some users have reported bugs, particularly with camera controls and performance issues on certain systems.

  • Additional Tactical Options: Suggestions include adding more breaching techniques (e.g., shotgun breaching, non-lethal options) and more tactical maneuvers to enhance gameplay depth.
  • Improved AI Behavior: Users want smarter AI that can react more realistically to situations, making gameplay feel more engaging and less reliant on luck.
  • Better Camera Controls: Some reviews mention the need for improved camera functionality, including more intuitive controls for freecam modes.
