Once Upon a Time in Japan: Earth is the first part of an adventure game trilogy that allows players to take part in events taking place in historical Japan, while giving them the opportunity to learn some information about the culture of this undoubtedly interesting country. The game is the first title developed by the Texan developer Abborado Studios. The target platform is a PC.

Once Upon a Time in Japan: Earth takes players to 17th century Japan, where they play Zenjiro, a samurai who left his clan to live in peace with his family during the war. Unfortunately, sixteen years later, as a result of a tragic accident, he is forced to travel through the province of Etchu in search of his wife and children. Along the way he meets many interesting characters, including Hanbei, a fearless ronin with a mysterious past and Shiho, daughter of the famous actor playing in the traditional Japanese theatre No. 2.

The protagonist slowly discovers that not everything is fine outside the province. The war campaigns from which he escaped years ago have returned. State unrest has meant that people have not been left too much freedom. Zenjiro finally realizes that his homeland will no longer be the same as before, and he cannot continue to flee. It is high time to make some decisions and take sides.

Once Upon a Time in Japan: Earth is an adventure that uses a point and click interface that is well known and appreciated by fans of the genre. The graphic design consists of hand-drawn backgrounds and characters in a style modelled on the productions of Disney and the Japanese studio Ghibli.

The music layer is a combination of the sounds of traditional instruments and contemporary sounds. The voices of the characters were placed by Japanese teachers.
