Phantom Abyss is an action adventure game with asynchronous multiplayer mode, in which we play as treasure hunters exploring dangerous temples taken straight from the Indiana Jones movies. The game was developed by an independent Australian studio Team WIBY, and it was published by Devolver Digital.

Mechanics

In Phantom Abyss, the action was shown from a first-person perspective (FPP). The gameplay takes place in procedurally generated temples hiding both countless riches and numerous dangers. Moving forward, we avoid the ubiquitous traps (from spikes sticking out of the ground, through sinkholes, to deadly pendulums) and jump over chasms, as well as search for chests with keys that allow us to get into deeper and deeper recesses of the ancient ruins. Our ultimate goal is to reach the very end of a temple, where a legendary relic awaits. After obtaining it, the ruins are sealed and no one has an access to them. In case of failure, however, we cannot return to the already visited temple, and the legendary relic hidden there awaits the next adventurer.

Hardcore Gamer: 3.5 / 5 by James Cunningham

Phantom Abyss is a trek into a lost and trap-filled temple that constantly has you on your toes. Each room is filled with several ways to die, or at least take a good amount of damage, and the constant pressure from the guardian means you have to think while moving. While there's something to be said for tearing through the level at top speed, the rooms are frequently interesting enough that it would be nice to stop and look around for a minute without being pushed forward. The secrets are highly satisfying to find, and when a guardian is dropping poison bombs or just relentlessly advancing that can feel like it's working against the necessary concentration or experimentation needed to reach them. A lot of the time it can feel easier to just dash on through, ignoring the intricate room design to reach the door to the next one, and the next and the next until finally reaching the exit. Every once in a while, though, Phantom Abyss manages to balance the speed and exploration, and that's when it's at its best.

WayTooManyGames: 6.5 / 10 by Kyle Nicol

Phantom Abyss is an interesting temple runner game that provides fast paced platformer gameplay and an ever escalating level of traps as you move from biome to biome. Despite having interesting ideas that should have spoken to me and my tastes, I didn’t find myself hooked into the game as much as I thought I would. Nothing about it, from its online systems to some of its later levels, did enough to make it worthwhile.

Try Hard Guides: 8 / 10 by Erik Hodges

Phantom Abyss is an adventure game with a heavy emphasis on movement mechanics, semi-cooperative gameplay, and a great deal of trial and error. Conquer traps, collect whips, and escape an esoteric prison in this “Indi” adventure game published by the masters of originality, Devolver Digital.

The main pros of the game

  • Fun Concept: Many users appreciated the core idea of the game, which involves navigating procedurally-generated temples and retrieving relics while avoiding traps and guardians. The asynchronous multiplayer aspect, where players can see the phantoms of others' attempts, was also highlighted as a unique and engaging feature.
  • Challenging Gameplay: The game provides a thrilling experience with a mix of platforming and puzzle-solving elements. Players enjoyed the adrenaline rush associated with the challenges and the need to think quickly.
  • Replayability: Some users mentioned that the game has a decent amount of content and encourages replaying due to its roguelike elements and the variety of challenges presented in different runs.
  • Nostalgia for Early Access: Several players expressed fondness for the game during its early access phase, recalling a more enjoyable experience with better mechanics and balance.

The main cons of the game

  • Game-Breaking Bugs: A significant number of reviews pointed out a persistent issue where certain temples become uncompletable due to locked doors or walls blocking paths. This was a major frustration for players and rendered parts of the game unplayable.
  • Abandonware Status: Many users noted that the game seems to have been abandoned by the developers, with no updates or fixes for known issues. This has led to a perception that the game is no longer being supported or improved.
  • Reduced Fun Factor: Players criticized the changes made post-release, stating that the game had become overly difficult and unbalanced. The introduction of modifiers and increased trap density was seen as detrimental to the gameplay experience.
  • Weak Progression System: The progression mechanics were described as lackluster, with players feeling that the excitement of discovering new abilities and upgrades had been diminished compared to earlier versions.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Multiplayer Experience: Some players expressed a desire for a true multiplayer mode where friends could play together in real-time rather than just seeing phantoms of past runs.
  • Better Balance and Design: Users suggested that the game needs a significant rebalancing to make the challenges fair and enjoyable, as many felt that the current state was frustrating.
  • Enhanced Narrative and Lore: Several reviews mentioned the need for a more engaging story and character development, as the current narrative was seen as uninspiring.
  • Local Play Option: There were calls for the game to be made offline compatible, allowing players to enjoy it without relying on server connectivity, which has been problematic.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Phantom Abyss" has its merits and a loyal fan base from its early access days, the current state of the game, marked by bugs and perceived abandonment, has led to widespread disappointment among players.
