Just like the first game in the series, Shadow of War takes place in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game is presented from a third-person perspective. We can explore the rich, open world of the game by riding various steeds and by taking good use of the free-running movement system, similar to that from the Assassin's Creed series.

The plot of the game refers to the Japanese mythology and focuses on the war waged with demons called Oni, which crawled out from under the ground and took over most of human settlements. Players take on the role of elite warriors, called to fight against the spreading evil. Gameplay boils down to exploration and conversations with NPCs who give us further tasks.

Two teams of 8 players each can participate in the game, and the individual heroes represent one of the 5 races. These include indigenous peoples as well as aggressors who want to take advantage of the chaos after the cosmic catastrophe. The fight was realized in the style of hack-and-slash games and rewards the skills of the players themselves, not their character stats.
