Death and the ensuing journey to the afterlife are topics not often exploited in video games. Among the developers who have decided to face them, one can find the American team Serenity Forge, behind the visual novel production described here, entitled Return to Ash.
The gameplay in Return to Ash is based on a genre pattern. Accompanying the protagonist, Ashleigh, on her journey through the afterlife, we watch almost static panels presenting the places the girl goes to, the events she takes part in and the characters she talks to. Along the way, we make decisions that affect the course of the story and its finale. The whole game has been prepared in such a way that it takes from 2 to 4 hours to complete.
The main protagonist of Return to Ash is a girl named Ashleigh, who we meet when she wakes up in the afterlife. The protagonist has to discover her new surroundings and face a masked being, who calls himself Death. Along the way, our protagonist establishes relationships with other characters stuck in this peculiar purgatory, learning about their personalities, dreams and reasons for wanting to come back to life.
The visuals of Return to Ash are kept in a cartoonish style and an almost entirely monochromatic color scheme. Shades of gray are punctuated here only by red occasionally appearing on the screen.
