Reus 2 is the sequel to a strategy-simulation game from 2013, in which we play as a deity leading a civilization. It was developed by the same studio as the previous game, expanding its formula rather than drastically changing it.

Plot

The game has no story per se. Instead it contains short descriptions of the giants taking care of nature and civilization, and of the actions of humanity we oversee. This lets the player shape the story of their world and its people on their own and, if the results are not to our liking, we can always start over.

Mechanics

The gameplay makes use of two perspectives: from the side, showing us the planet's cross-section, and from above when approaching specific regions. There are many planets we must overlook, their flora and fauna developing differently depending on their conditions. Our goal isn't to restrictively control every species but to provide them with resources, space and opportunities to develop on their own. Thanks to us they'll start functioning independently using gifts granted by us - in case of humanity, this also means technological and cultural progress. Change can always occur suddenly and unexpectedly, and it is up to us to decide whether we'll influence it to happen. If we so wish, we can even wipe out a civilization in certain cases, such as using nukes.

We have many giants at our disposal, serving as guardians of nature. Their abilities are tied to specific biomes, and the more nature develops, the more combinations we'll get to develop. Thanks to the multitude of decisions to be made, each playthrough of Reus 2 is unique, letting us shape species and planets in different ways. Once humans manage to reach the stars, we will need to decide whether we want to reveal ourselves and our plans to them.

Technical aspects

The visuals make use of a low poly 2D artstyle. The game looks appealing while maintaining low system requirements.
