Runaway is a typical oldschool adventure game. Its design resembles an immortal series of Monkey Island, and it even shares its pros, such as very nice, comic-like 2D graphics, modern interface, and – first and foremost – enthralling story. The protagonist is Brian, a graduate in physics. One day, he decides to leave his beloved home behind and continue his studying in Berkeley. However, his trip to the West Coast is quickly interrupted when he meets a beautiful woman by the name of Gina who, as it turns out, is involved in a deadly criminal affair. Some people want to obtain a mysterious crucifix that was given to her by her father before he died. Since then, the two are forced to flee the pursuit, at least until they can solve the mystery behind the aforementioned crucifix and the people who want it so badly. It is up to the players to find the answers.

  • Art Style: The hand-drawn 2D backgrounds and character designs received praise for their detail and charm, even if the 3D character models were considered crude.
  • Humor and Writing: The game features sharp meta-humor and witty dialogue, which adds a layer of entertainment, making players smile despite some of the more puzzling moments.

  • Pixel Hunting: Several reviews noted that important items were often hard to find, blending into the environment or being too small to notice, which detracted from the gameplay experience.
  • Linear Progression: The game was criticized for its lack of flexibility in how players could solve puzzles, leading to a feeling of restriction and reduced enjoyment.
  • Technical Issues: Some players experienced problems running the game on modern systems, particularly Windows 11, which affected their ability to play.

  • Multiple Solutions to Puzzles: A call for more flexibility in puzzle-solving methods was noted, allowing players to approach challenges in different ways rather than following a strict sequence.
  • Improved Character Development: Some users felt that the characters, especially the female lead, lacked depth and agency, suggesting that more nuanced character arcs could enhance the narrative.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions included reducing the number of unskippable cutscenes and enhancing the overall interactivity of the game, particularly towards the end where the pacing felt rushed.

Summary

  • In summary, while "Runaway: A Road Adventure" is fondly remembered for its nostalgic value, humor, and visual style, it faces criticism for its frustrating puzzles, linear gameplay, and some dated character portrayals. Players appreciate its charm but also highlight areas for improvement that could enhance the overall experience.
