Game mode: single player
Sid Meier's Pirates! for PC, PSP and etc. is a remake of the classic title from eightiesí. Similarly to the original game, the new version mixes features of action games, adventure games and cRPGs. It takes place during the age of the pirates of the Caribbean. The players receive an unusual opportunity to become one of these pirates and mark their place in the pages of the history.
Similarly to the original Pirates!, in the remake the developers (including Sid Meier) provided an open, almost unlimited world (the game ends once the players decide itís time for a retirement). It is possible to seal a ship or a whole fleet in any direction the players want. They can plunder cities, sink trading convoys or even offer services to colonial empires: England, France, Holland or Spain.
Sid Meierís Pirates! is a title that consists of several minigames that together make the game into a very unique experience among other pirate games. Among the features included in the game there is an option to control ship or a fleet, to avoid storms and escape enemy ships. Players can stop in ports and replenish supplies, recruit crew, repair ships, sell loot, listen to local gossip or accept quests (all of that can be done through a special menu).
In the game it is also possible to visit influential governors and increase protagonistís social status, to participate in naval battles that include ship maneuvering, shooting at enemies and boarding, to participate in melee combat with the use of sables and many special attacks and to escape prisons by avoiding guards and by moving through the labyrinths of alleys in the port (the player is taken to a prison after he or she loses a naval battle.
Other activities available in the PC, PSP and etc. version of Sid Meierís Pirates! include looking for legendary, buried treasures by collecting pieces of old maps, leading pirates during an assaults on ports and cities (this activity features a simplified RTS interface) and conquering the hearts of governorís daughters (for example by performing heroic acts or dancing).
The game features special items like better sable or a barometer. They improve protagonistís combat efficiency or skills of navigating the ship during hard conditions. Players can also encounter specialists that can be recruited to the crew and increase combat efficiency or other shipís parameters. Another feature in the game is the option to look for lost family members and to fight against an evil pirate responsible for the death of protagonistís parents.
The new version offers the same content as the original title, although it was expanded and the gameplay was polished. The greatest change is the new, three-dimensional graphics engine. The visuals are aesthetical and nice looking. The gameís world imitates the seventeenthí and eighteenthí century, although it uses a slightly cartoonish style. Ships look authentic and people are wearing clothes characteristic for the times.
