Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

A French video game developer and publisher based in Paris, whose roots date back to 1983. Although the company was founded as Infogrames, it changed its name to Atari in 2009 and has undergone a number of restructurizations over the years.

History of Atari / Infogrames

1980s and 90. 20th century

The company was founded in 1983 by Bruno Bonnell and Christophe Sapet. Its first name, Infogrames, was a modified version of a proposal generated by a word-mixing computer program.

Although the company gained recognition already in the 1980s, it gained global fame with the release of Alone in the Dark in 1992, considered one of the progenitors of the survival horror genre. This game helped the studio to gain momentum and begin a process of large-scale expansion to become one of the world's largest video game publishers.

Second half of the 1990s was a year of acquisitions for Infogrames. It got companies like Philips Media, Ocean International (parent company of the developer and publisher Ocean Software), Gremlin Group (and consequently – Gremlin Interactive), DMA Design (later Rockstar North), Accolade and GT Interactive.

The last of the mentioned companies expanded Infogrames' catalog of brands with titles such as Driver, Duke Nukem, Oddworld, Unreal Tournament, and Deer Hunter, and also gave it control over a number of development studios, such as Reflections Interactive, the team behind the Driver series. In September 1999, the aforementioned DMA Design was sold to Take-Two Interactive and incorporated into Rockstar Games, changing its name to Rockstar North.

Over the years, most of the companies that were part of Infogrames lost their identity and adopted new names.

The first decade of the 21st century

The company entered the third millennium by continuing its expansion, e.g. by buying out Paradigm Entertainment and Hasbro Interactive. Thanks to the latter company, it received a number of large brands, such as Civilization, RollerCoaster Tycoon, as well as MicroProse and Atari. The transaction closed on January 29, 2001, and resulted in the renaming of Hasbro Interactive to Infogrames Interactive Inc. and the revival of Atari as a brand to represent the new publishing company. Since October 2001, Infogrames was to specialize in games for younger audiences, while productions aimed at adult gamers were to be released under the Atari banner.

In April 2002, the company acquired Shiny Entertainment (which survived under its wing for four years and then was passed to Foundation 9 Entertainment). In September, the British MicroProse was closed, and in October the company took over Eden Games. Since 2002, the company's financial situation began to get progressively worse. The year 2003 brought a reorganization in which all the entities constituting it were to operate under a common banner – Atari. While Infogrames, Inc. (formerly GT Interactive) was renamed Atari, Inc., Infogrames Interactive, Inc. changed its name to Atari Interactive, Inc. However, the company as a whole retained its current name, Infogrames Entertainment SA.

Accumulating problems

The company's financial condition forced it to begin the process of closing studios and selling brands. As a result, the company got rid of, among others, the Gremlin Interactive catalog, the rights to the Unreal and Civilization brands, and even the Reflections Interactive studio (along with the Driver series).

The restructuring also brought changes at the top. In September 2006, Bruno Bonnell stepped down as CEO of the company, replaced by David Pierce, and in April 2007 he left the company. Interestingly, this led to a 24 percent increase in the value of its shares. The changes also resulted in layoffs. However, these measures did not significantly contribute to changing the company's financial situation and did not save it from further losses.

In October 2008, Infogrames and Atari Inc. merged, creating a single entity. In 2008, the company started cooperation with Namco Bandai (later Bandai Namco Entertainment), and as a consequence – the takeover by the latter of the European branch of Atari and the distribution activities of the described company in the PAL region. Interestingly, despite the difficult situation, in December 2008 Atari acquired Cryptic Studios. Finally, in May 2009, the decision was made to change the name of the entire company to Atari SA.

The 2010s

The first half of the second decade of the 21st century was marked by the declaration of bankruptcy by its North American companies, and consequently – the reduction of its portfolio by losing brands such as Desperados, Outcast, Master of Orion, Total Annihilation, Star Control, as well as Accolade and GT Interactive. The bankruptcy proceedings saved all three affected North American entities. Over the following years, Atari continued to sell its brands (the rights to Test Drive and V-Rally, among others, and later also Alone in the Dark and Act of War).

As for its subsequent ventures, they included both unsuccessful moves, led by the launch of Atari Casino, and more successful investments, such as the release of retro consoles and the revival of classic productions.

The 2020s

The latter became a pillar of Atari's business in the third decade of the 21st century, when Wade Rosen became the company's CEO. He restructured the company, dividing it into two entities: Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain (later joined by the reactivated Infogrames), getting rid of the casinos, and expanding it by, e.g. acquiring brands (such as RollerCoaster Tycoon and Transport Tycoon) and development studios (Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse).
