Sid Meier’s Pirates! (1987) PC

Sid Meier's Pirates! is one of the first high-profile productions that came from the hands of the legendary Sid Meier and today's almost non-existent company MicroProse. In this title the player has the opportunity to move back to the times of the so-called Golden Age of the Caribbean Piracy and become one of the most famous pirates who then sailed the seas and oceans. We have a choice of six historical periods, in which we will cross numerous sea routes (for example "The Silver Empire" between 1500-1600, and "War For Profit" between 1640-1660), and our hero may belong to one of four nationalities (English, French, Dutch and Spanish) and may specialize in one of five abilities, including fencing, navigation, or the ability to win women's favour.

The goal of the game is nothing more than enjoying the life of a typical killer and sea wolf, i.e. fighting fierce sea battles, numerous duels for swords, plundering cities and commercial transports; and leaving for "retirement" with unimaginable wealth, as well as with the title of Colonel, Admiral, Marquis or even Prince; naturally with a beautiful wife at the side. There are nine different ships in the game, ranging from small commercial units to large war galleons. Each of them is characterized by different parameters, i.e. number of guns, number of crews, hull strength, etc.

Sid Meier's Pirates game! turned out to be so successful that in 1993 (six years after the premiere, which took place in 1987) Pirates was released! Gold, the refreshed version of this title. The game differed from the original with new high-resolution graphics (SVGA) and compatibility with Windows 3.1.
