Sonic Rumble is a social arcade game. We can play as the titular hedgehog Sonic and a number of other characters known from the series, entering the world of toys created by the sinister Doctor Eggman. The development and release of this game was handled by the Japanese company Sega, which has been overseeing the brand from the beginning. The game is distributed in a free-to-play model with microtransactions.

Gameplay

In Sonic Rumble, the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP).

Characters

The game gives us a range of characters from the Sonic universe, led by the titular hero and his antagonist, as well as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Shadow. During the game, we acquire cosmetic additions such as skins, animations, and effects. They allow us to adapt them to individual preferences and stand out in the crowd of other players.

Competitions

We participate in various competitions, facinga against other players. There are various competitions available in the game. We can join a Race (in which we try to reach the finish line in the highest possible position), try our luck in Survival (in which we try to stay in the game as long as possible) or check out the Battle for Rings (where our goal is to collect as many golden rings scattered around the area as possible).

The main pros of the game

  • Gameplay Enjoyment: Many users find the gameplay fun and engaging, often comparing it favorably to games like *Fall Guys*. The variety of mini-games and the Sonic-themed environments are particularly appreciated.
  • Free-to-Play Model: Players can enjoy a significant portion of the game without spending money. Many report being able to unlock characters and skins through regular gameplay.
  • Nostalgic Elements: The game incorporates various elements from the Sonic franchise, including references to past games, which resonate well with fans.
  • Graphics and Soundtrack: The visuals and remixed music from the Sonic series are highlighted as enjoyable aspects of the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Aggressive Monetization: Users overwhelmingly criticize the monetization strategy, describing it as predatory. Skins can cost upwards of $40-$70, which many consider excessive, especially for a free game.
  • Pay-to-Win Concerns: While some argue that skins do not provide a gameplay advantage, others feel that the ability to purchase skills and upgrades creates a pay-to-win environment, particularly in ranked play.
  • User Interface Issues: The game is criticized for its mobile-centric UI, which is seen as cluttered and not well-optimized for PC. Users report difficulties navigating menus and finding information.
  • Daily Limits and Grind: Players express frustration with the daily ring limit that restricts progression and the grind required to earn in-game currency, which can feel tedious.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Progression Systems: Many users suggest that the game should allow for more straightforward progression without excessive grinding or waiting periods to earn currency.
  • More Cosmetic Options: While there are many skins, players feel that the pricing is prohibitive and that there should be more affordable options or ways to earn skins through gameplay.
  • Balancing of Skills: Users call for a reevaluation of the skills system to ensure that it does not create an unbalanced playing field, particularly in competitive modes.
  • Improved Communication and Updates: Players express a desire for better communication from developers regarding updates and future content, especially after the long delays before the game's release.

Summary

  • Overall, while *Sonic Rumble* has its enjoyable aspects and potential, the aggressive monetization and gameplay limitations have led to a mixed reception among players.
