The Alien Cube is an independent adventure game with a first-person perspective (FPP), set in Lovecraft's horror style. The game was developed by Alessandro Guzzo and is a spiritual sequel to the first game in the Guzzo Productions series - The Land of Pain.

Plot

The game begins with a mysterious sequence in which the main character (Arthur) first wanders through an ghostly cave and then witnesses a sudden meteorite collision with the ground. When he finally gets his hands on an unknown object emanating green light, the man starts screaming and then wakes up from a dream in his own room.

While crawling around the apartment and trying to comprehend the meaning of the mysterious dream, Arthur suddenly hears the doorbell ring. A letter lies on the rug outside the front door. It turns out that it is a message from his uncle Edgar. The main character learns from it that his uncle has died, and that the letter he wrote down earlier was to be delivered to him after his death. The content shows that the man also bequeathed him his apartment. However, the man also told Arthur to get rid of any items (especially manuscripts) that seemed strange or incomprehensible to him. Intrigued by the contents of the letter, the protagonist decides to go to the apartment as soon as possible.

Game mechanics

As in other adventure games, the main goal is to explore the world, solve puzzles and gradually discover the next story details. The protagonist can interact with various objects and analyze the records and cassettes discovered along the way to have a better idea of what his uncle did before he died. He also keeps a journal himself to record the more important events.

Collectible items are useful in later stages of the game, for example to open a passage or unlock a cache. To make things easier, some of the interactive objects (such as the light switch) have also been highlighted in less lit areas. During his journey the hero has also the opportunity to collect statuettes - these are secret objects emanating a green aura, hidden more or less cleverly in various locations. In total, there are 8 such figurines in the game.

The Alien Cube also has some survival elements. Although most of the injuries suffered by the character cannot be avoided, because they are dictated by the storyline, performing certain actions hastily can also lead to worsening health. In these situations, the edges of the screen become covered in blood, which usually fades quickly. Sometimes, however, an injury is so serious that it is necessary to look around for a hidden first aid kit. The protagonist is also sensitive to temperature changes, and in some situations must save himself by escaping.

Technical aspects

The game has a pleasant 3D graphics, developed using the CryEngine 5 engine. The whole thing is embellished by an atmospheric soundtrack.
