The Descendant for PC is an episodic adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic reality. It was developed by a Swedish studio Gaming Corps.

Story

The Descendant for PC is set in a post-apocalyptic world where climatic changes and dwindling natural resources led to a worldwide conflict. Its ultimate effect was the complete destruction of the human civilization. The only survivors made it inside the so-called Arks - extensive underground shelters where they were to remain in the cryogenic chambers until the Earth is a fully inhabitable place again.

The story has two main branches divided by hundreds of years. In the first scenario, the player takes control over Mia, a woman taking care about the elite humans sleeping in the cryogenic chambers of the Ark 01, where the facility's maintenance systems begin to display failures. The second scenario fast-forwards to when the humans from the Arks are woken up and begin inhabiting the planet again. Unfortunately, for some unknown reasons, Ark 01 did not open. The player takes control over a man called Donnie whose job is to discover what happened. During his investigation, he stumbles upon the signs of a conspiracy that can put the ultimate end to the human species.

The Descendant Review – new interactive movie makes a ponderous take-off

In life, you can either make your own rules, or blindly follow the beaten track. Swedish Game Corps studio seems to have taken the latter route, and so far this decision has only backfired.

  • Character Development: Characters are generally well-written, and players appreciated the dual-timeline narrative that allows for deeper exploration of their motivations and the consequences of their actions.
  • Addictive Gameplay: Despite some criticisms, several players noted that the game is engaging and can be binge-worthy, similar to watching a thrilling series.
  • Low Hardware Requirements: The game runs well on lower-end systems, making it accessible to a wider audience.

The main cons of the game

  • Poor Camera Control: Players frequently mentioned frustrating camera angles and movement issues that hindered navigation and immersion.
  • Unskippable Dialogue: The inability to skip dialogue or replay episodes without significant backtracking was a common complaint, making replayability tedious.
  • Dialogue Choices Lacking Impact: Several users felt that the choices made during the game did not significantly affect the overall story, leading to a sense of helplessness in decision-making.
  • Technical Issues: Some players experienced crashes and bugs, particularly in later chapters, which detracted from the overall experience.

  • More Complex Puzzles: Players wanted more challenging and varied puzzles that would enhance engagement rather than feeling like busywork.
  • Enhanced Character Interaction: There were calls for more meaningful interactions between characters that would reflect their relationships and histories more convincingly.
  • Improved Control Schemes: Many players wished for more intuitive control options, such as thumbstick movement, instead of being limited to point-and-click mechanics.
  • More Impactful Choices: Users desired a deeper branching narrative where choices felt more consequential and could lead to varied outcomes, increasing replayability.

Summary

  • Overall, "The Descendant" presents an intriguing narrative experience with a unique premise, but it is hampered by technical issues, gameplay limitations, and a lack of meaningful player agency.
