Despite somewhat samey missions and a flat protagonist, Khazan's combat and boss design are some of the best I've seen in a soulslike.

PlayStation Universe: 9.5 / 10 by Garri Bagdasarov

The First Berserker: Khazan is greatness from nothingness personified. Neople has done what so many have tried to do in the past. If TFB Khazan is not on your map, then, well, you need a new map. From brutal yet manageable combat to fantastic level and monster designs, Khazan aims high and hits every target it finds.

The main pros of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The combat system is highly praised for its responsiveness, fluidity, and depth. Players enjoy the mix of parrying, dodging, and chaining attacks, which creates a satisfying combat experience. The ability to respec skill points freely enhances gameplay flexibility.
  • Boss Fights: Boss battles are a standout feature, often described as engaging and challenging. Many players appreciate the variety and design of the bosses, which encourage learning and skill mastery.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Features like recovering lost souls at the boss gate, generous checkpoints, and the ability to change skill points without cost contribute to a more user-friendly experience compared to other souls-like games.
  • Graphics and Art Style: The game's visual presentation, including the art style and character design, is well-received, with many players noting its unique aesthetic.
  • Soundtrack and Audio: The music and sound effects, especially during combat and boss fights, are highlighted as exceptional, enhancing the overall experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Level Design: Many players criticize the level design for being linear and repetitive, with areas lacking distinctiveness and variety. The reuse of environments and enemies contributes to a feeling of monotony.
  • Limited Weapon Variety: The game features only three weapon types, which some players feel restricts gameplay diversity and replayability. This limitation can lead to a sense of being locked into a specific playstyle.
  • Difficulty Balance: While the game is challenging, some players feel that certain bosses have excessive health, leading to frustration. The difficulty can feel artificially inflated at times.
  • Story and Character Depth: The narrative is often described as predictable and lacking depth, with character development not resonating strongly with players. Side quests may feel like padding rather than meaningful content.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Exploration Depth: Players express a desire for more engaging exploration mechanics, such as jumping or more intricate level designs that encourage curiosity and discovery.
  • Enhanced Enemy Variety: A broader range of enemy types and designs is requested to keep encounters fresh and engaging throughout the game.
  • More Weapon Options: Some players wish for additional weapon types or classes to diversify combat styles further and prevent gameplay from feeling stale.
  • Improved Storytelling: A more compelling narrative with deeper character arcs and plot twists is desired, as many players find the current story lacking in substance.

Summary

  • Overall, "The First Berserker: Khazan" is recognized for its strong combat mechanics and engaging boss fights, but it faces criticism for its level design, limited weapon variety, and story depth.
