The Lift: Supernatural Handyman Simulator is a game from a Russian director, Ivan Slavtsov, known for his previous work on Pathologic 2. We become the titular handyman tasked with restoring a research facility to working order. In addition to repairing things and cleaning junk, we also need to defend against an alien being.
The Lift: Supernatural Handyman Simulator is a game simulating the work of a handyman in an abandoned research institute. This first-person title is the debut of the independent studio Fantastic Signals, whose Russian director Ivan Slovtsov previously worked on Pathologic 2 .
The core of the gameplay in The Lift is completing tasks assigned to us by other characters using an intercom. Each floor of the research facility requires restoration to its original, undamaged state. As a handyman, we are busy collecting odds and ends, and our jobs range from objectives as mundane as replacing a screw in a wobbly chair to more complex engineering tasks like replacing electrical wiring.
The challenges take on an unusual form thanks to fantasy machinery and a pulsating black mass that we have to get rid of by sucking it up with a kind of vacuum cleaner. To prevent the mysterious substance from further expanding, we need to patch holes in the walls using a strange glue gun.
Some environmental puzzles require the use of crafting. The world of The Lift is littered with random, faulty items, from staplers to giant calculators. They can be thrown into a trash chute in exchange for tokens, which we use to purchase a limited number of spare parts from vending machines. The game features backtracking.
The Lift: Supernatural Handyman Simulator is built on the Unity engine, and the world depicted is inspired by Soviet retrofuturism.
