Dovetail Games studio made its mark in the history of video games with a series of train simulators under the title Train Sim World. After years of developing their flagship series, the developers decided to try something new, so they reached for the Tom and Friends license. The fruit of this endeavor was the game Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor.
In Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor, we can take on the role of the driver of a locomotive of our choice (or a passenger on a train) and travel across the title island in his sk?ra. We will find a number of iconic locations on it, such as Domkowo or Knapford Station. Although the game is based on Train Sim World and allows you to operate the locomotives yourself, due to convention, the controls here have been somewhat simplified.
Apart from Tom, who is a steam locomotive, the title puts at our disposal such units as Peter, Gordon, Emilka and Diesel. Complementing them are Ania and Klara wagons (belonging to Tom), an express and a freight depot. We follow their adventures through a series of stories, among which we find both familiar and original plots. These include Tom and Gordon, The Great Race of Tom and Berci or Peter's Troublesome Day. The narrator here is Mark Moraghan, known from the original.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor can only be played as a single player. The gameplay variants such as Stories (missions dedicated to different characters), Shunting Challenge (a mini-game in which we maneuver the train), Timetable (where we make sure that the trains running on different lines stick to the work schedule) and Free Roam (a free mode in which we don't look at any targets and restrictions) are waiting to be checked.
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor runs on Unreal Engine 5 and uses Simugraph technology developed for Train Sim World.

Gameffine: 80 / 100 by Farzeen K H
Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor is exactly what it looks like. A simple, calm, and approachable game set in a familiar world. It doesn’t try to surprise you, and it doesn’t try to challenge you. Instead, it focuses on being easy to play and easy to enjoy. For its target audience, that’s probably the right decision. Yes, it can feel repetitive. Yes, it doesn’t have a lot of depth. But it also delivers a consistent, relaxed experience that’s hard to find in more demanding games. For kids and fans of the series, it’s a great fit. For everyone else, it depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you want something light and low-stress, it does the job. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.

I struggle to understand who is Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor for. Kids won’t have the patience to learn about a complex training simulator, and will ragequit almost immediately once they face unskippable cutscenes, poorly explained mechanics, and a plethora of mission-breaking bugs. Older fans of modern train simulators already have access to the vastly more polished Train Sim World series to begin with. I tried to see this game as something aimed at a more specific demographic, but this is just too clunky and too poorly made. I had a miserable time with Wonders of Sodor, and doubt I’ll be the only one sharing this opinion.
Thumb Culture: 3 / 5
At first, Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor really hits that sweet spot. Sodor feels comforting, the sights and sounds are exactly what you want. There is a simple joy in pretending you are a very useful engine with everything under control. Even as things start to fade, I still found myself enjoying parts of it. There is a charm here that keeps you going, even when it feels a bit rough around the edges. It just about does enough to stay on track, and I was glad to take the journey. That said, the cracks do start to show. The gameplay never really evolves and the world feels a little underdeveloped. It’s stuck between being a proper simulation and a simpler experience. It is enjoyable in small doses, but it never quite pushes itself as far as it could have. It’s a nostalgic ride that doesn’t quite go the distance before stopping short, but I’m still glad I climbed aboard. And so I am giving Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor the Thumb Culture Silver Award.
