In 2017, Dovetail Games studio, known for the Train Simulator, started a new series of train-focused games. Train Sim World, which we are talking about, has become the new apple of this team's eye over the years. As the title suggests, Train Sim World 6 described here is its sixth installment.

Gameplay

Train Sim World 6 is a simulator that allows us to take on the role of a train driver. Sitting at the controls of various locomotives, we travel through European and American routes, independently operating all devices and systems. The conductor mode created for Train Sim World 5 returns here, through which we have to take care of passenger service, which involves checking tickets, opening and closing doors, and ensuring safety.

Biggest new features

The impression of being on board a real train is enhanced in Train Sim World 6 by the conversations of passengers that we can hear in the background. We also need to listen carefully to the announcements to prepare ourselves for various surprises that may happen to us during the journey. We can't prepare for everything, because we can also experience various random events (like longer stops at the signal or additional speed limits) and breakdowns.

Routes and trains

Train Sim World 6 gives us three routes to choose from.

The main pros of the game

  • New Routes: The game features three new routes, with the Riviera Line being particularly praised for its beautiful scenery and immersive experience.
  • Improved Sound Design: Users appreciate the new station and train announcements, which enhance immersion.
  • Random Events and Faults: The introduction of random train faults and temporary speed restrictions adds variety to gameplay, making each run feel unique.
  • Stability Improvements: Some players noted that the game runs slightly better than its predecessor, TSW5, with fewer crashes and improved performance for certain setups.
  • Diverse Train Models: The inclusion of new locomotives like the Class 220 Voyager and the BR 294 has been well-received, with players enjoying their driving experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Innovation: Many users feel that TSW6 is essentially a repackage of TSW5 with minimal changes, leading to disappointment over the perceived lack of evolution in the series.
  • Persistent Bugs: Long-standing bugs from previous versions have carried over, affecting gameplay and immersion. Users reported issues like stuttering, frame drops, and bugs in the train systems.
  • High Price for Limited Content: The game is considered overpriced by some, especially given that many features could have been delivered as updates rather than a full-priced new release.
  • Performance Issues: Despite some improvements, many players still experience performance problems, such as micro-stutters and graphical glitches.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Updates for Older Content: Players expressed frustration that existing routes and trains have not been updated to match the new features and improvements in TSW6.
  • Enhanced Graphics and Engine Upgrades: Users are disappointed that the game still runs on an outdated graphics engine without major visual improvements, like ray tracing or modern graphical enhancements.
  • Multiplayer and Expanded Features: There are calls for more robust features, such as multiplayer options, better passenger behavior, and improved AI for train dispatching.
  • More Realistic Faults: While the random fault system is a new feature, users feel it is not well-implemented and can lead to frustrating gameplay experiences.

Summary

  • Overall, while Train Sim World 6 has its highlights, particularly with new routes and sound design, the overwhelming sentiment from users is that it falls short of expectations due to its lack of innovation and persistent issues. Many players recommend waiting for sales or patches before purchasing.
