The independent studio Resurgent, which is behind the shooter titled Transience described here, decided to capture the "spirit" of iconic games from the first decade of the 21st century. Their inspirations are reflected both in the storyline and in the mechanics of this production, which combines gameplay typical of an FPS with stealth elements.

Gameplay

In Transience the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game is divided into missions, during which we complete assigned objectives, explore diverse locations (from interiors to skyscraper rooftops), and eliminate encountered enemies.

Arsenal

We dispose of enemies using a wide range of firearms. The game implements the NWS (New World Systems) system, allowing extensive modification of individual weapons by exchanging various components and attachments. Thanks to this, it is possible to transform a submachine gun into an assault rifle or the latter into a sniper rifle. By finding caches scattered throughout the locations, we unlock new guns and attachments for them.

Suit

That's not all, as the main character is also equipped with a modern Novaskin combat suit. It provides protection against bullets and offers access to a range of gadgets, including a light pulse that blinds enemies, a tool to distract them, and night vision enabling sight in the dark.

Stealth

A frontal attack on enemies is often not the best choice here. Sometimes a more effective approach is sneaking behind their backs and hiding in the shadows or ventilation shafts, and taking out targets by surprise.

  • Sound Design: The soundtrack and ambient sounds are noted as strong points, contributing to the overall atmosphere of the game.
  • Engagement Factor: Some players appreciated the narrative and the effort put into the voice acting and cutscenes, feeling it added depth to the experience.

The main cons of the game

  • AI Issues: The enemy AI is frequently criticized for being inconsistent, sometimes being overly aware and lethal, while at other times behaving predictably and poorly, making stealth gameplay frustrating.
  • Performance Problems: Many players report performance issues, including frame rate drops and stuttering, especially in more complex scenes.
  • Level Design: The levels are often described as linear and lacking depth, with some players feeling that exploration is not rewarding enough.
  • Narrative and Characterization: The main character's dialogue is often seen as excessive and cringeworthy, detracting from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Stealth Mechanics: Many players feel that the stealth system needs significant improvement, as it often fails to work as intended, with enemies spotting players too easily.
  • Manual Save System: Several reviews mention the absence of a manual save option, which can lead to frustrating experiences when players lose progress.
  • More Dynamic AI Behavior: Players would like to see more varied and intelligent AI behaviors, such as flanking tactics and better reactions to player actions.
  • Diverse Enemy Types and Encounters: A desire for more enemy variety and more engaging combat encounters was expressed, as repetitive enemy types can diminish the challenge.

Conclusion

  • While Transience has a solid foundation with its engaging atmosphere, gunplay, and artistic style, it is hampered by significant issues with AI, performance, and level design. Many players express hope for future updates to address these shortcomings, making it a title to watch for potential improvements.
