Ramjet Studios is an independent development studio that has been around since 2017. Its name refers to the Bussard Ramjet, a hypothetical interstellar propulsion system that uses interstellar hydrogen as fuel. Vein described here is a survival sandbox created by this team, where we fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by the living dead.

Gameplay

In Vein the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Character creation

During the game we control a character whose appearance we can customize to our individual preferences, deciding on their body build and hairstyle. Additionally, we can adjust their stats to our needs and dress the protagonist in outfits acquired during the game.

Exploration and resource gathering

The game provides us with an open world—the northern part of the state of New York—which we can freely explore. When visiting mostly abandoned locations, we primarily focus on gathering resources that enable our survival. Among these, food is paramount. We can rely on canned meat and what we find, but over time we can and should become self-sufficient by farming, hunting, or fishing. If we wish to travel around the game world using vehicles, it's worth ensuring a supply of fuel in advance.

Fighting enemies and random events

That's not the end, as an important role is also played by fighting against opponents. Enemies, among whom we find both zombies and bandits, are eliminated using melee weapons and firearms (in addition, elements of the environment can serve as weapons). When enemies have a numerical advantage over us, we can try to take them by surprise or stealthily sneak behind their backs. The situation is complicated by the fact that enemies can not only see us but also hear and smell us.

Summary

  • Overall, VEIN shows a lot of potential as a post-apocalyptic survival game, particularly for fans of Project Zomboid. However, it still requires substantial development to address current issues and fulfill its promise.
