War on Cancer is a twin-stick shooter developed by Fundacja Onkologiczna Alivia in cooperation with Saatchi&Saatchi and Platige Image. The mobile release for iOS was developed by 11 bit studios.

In opposition to other mobile titles games, War on Cancer offers an unusual approach to the distribution method – the game is a free-to-play title with optional microtransactions that are either donated to a chosen person currently battling cancer, or added to “Skarbonka”, an individual account whose revenue is used to help all the patients that are in the system.

Mechanics

War on Cancer takes place inside of a living organism. The action is seen from a top-down perspective, while our job is to eliminate the tumors represented by various monsters that appear on the battlefield. Our hero has to watch out for the black fields, the areas of the organism that are affected by a large cancer. Unfortunately, we are often facing shortages of ammo (regardless of what kind of weapon we are currently using), which means that the game favors high dexterity and accuracy. The players can also view special scoreboards that memorize the best playthroughs.

The battlefield is scattered with power-ups replenishing your ammunition level, yet they are often scarce, requiring the players to buy the ammunition for real cash through microtransactions. Moreover, in case of defeat (interestingly enough, we cannot die – the player can either get weary or lose all their ammo), we can continue the game by paying a small fee or by watching a short advertisement.

Technical Aspects

War on Cancer for iOS offers satisfying visuals, similar to what we can encounter in other popular mobile shooters. The detailed character models, as well as light and particle effects that accompany different weaponry and projectiles are quite pleasing to look at.
