Wheel World (originally announced under the title Ghost Bike) is a third-person perspective (TPP) adventure and arcade game dedicated to cycling. Its development was done by Messhof studio, founded in 2013 by Mark Essen and Kristy Norindr. The Annapurna Interactive company took care of its release.

Gameplay

The main premise of the gameplay in Wheel World is the exploration of the semi-open game world and taking on various challenges. They include races (both "back alley" and higher level), testing our skills. Along the way, we encounter many colorful NPCs - from crazy fans to troublesome tourists or all sorts of cyclists.

As we progress, we can improve and customize our bike to individual needs and preferences. Using components scattered around the locations, we gradually turn it into a road speed demon or an off-road monster.

A fun world to explore; odd characters that you meet only add to the game's overall appeal. Wheel World has impressed with its art style and the quality of the story.

Wheel World is an amalgamation of boring races and exploration, poor storytelling, and often clumsy gameplay that never felt great.

  • Cycling Culture References: The game resonates well with cycling enthusiasts, featuring humor and references to cycling culture that many found relatable and enjoyable.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty and AI Issues: Many reviewers noted that the game is too easy, especially in the early stages, with little challenge in races. The AI behavior was frequently criticized for being unrealistic, often leading to frustrating collisions that negatively impacted gameplay.
  • Performance Issues: Several users reported bugs, particularly with collision detection and frame rate drops, especially in crowded areas. This affected the overall enjoyment of the game, particularly during races.
  • Short Length: A common complaint was that the game is relatively short, with many players finishing the main story in about 5-10 hours. Some felt that the content did not justify the price tag, especially if they were looking for a longer experience.

  • Improved Upgrade System: Users wished for a more engaging upgrade system that allowed for meaningful progression, such as the ability to enhance parts over time or have preset bike configurations for different racing styles.
  • Collectible Tracking and Fast Travel Options: Many reviewers pointed out the lack of a collectible tracker on the map, making it difficult to find all items. Additionally, the inability to fast travel between different areas was seen as a hindrance to exploration and completion.
  • Difficulty Settings: Some players requested adjustable difficulty levels to cater to a broader range of player skills, allowing for a more tailored challenge.

Summary

  • Overall, while Wheel World has a solid foundation with its charming visuals, engaging gameplay, and cycling culture references, it is hampered by performance issues, AI behavior, and a lack of depth in certain gameplay aspects. Many players are hopeful for future updates or DLC that could address these concerns and expand the game further.
