GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition for mobile devices is now available to Netflix subscribers. It turns out that the new edition of these classic but refreshed titles looks better than on PC.

When it was announced that the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition bundle from Rockstar Games would hit mobile devices in a special updated version, probably no one expected that it would ultimately perform better than the original on PC. Meanwhile, as of yesterday, we can play these editions both as part of Netflix subscription, as well as after making a purchase on Google Play or the App Store, and it appears that they have more of the atmosphere of the originals there than the definitive edition intended for PC and consoles.

Changes on the plus side

Rockstar rather modestly reports on the changes on its official website:

"Classic titles - Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (...) can now be purchased separately for mobile devices. They contain additional enhancements, including a new classic lighting mode that recreates the look and feel of the original games."

At this point, it is worth mentioning that so far Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition has not enjoyed much success. The remake package was criticized for its exorbitant price, bugs and lack of improvements over the originals. However, the heaviest criticism was that the newer versions of these classics were completely devoid of the atmosphere of the originals. Colors were standardized and paled, and models of characters and environmental elements were strangely artificial and washed out of character.

The new versions, however, have a lot to say on the subject. You can watch a detailed comparison below. You can see that, thanks to the new mode, the original colors and the characteristic "haze" that blurs the sharpness of objects somewhat have returned. Character models and clothing textures also look sort of better.

The vibe is back

Surprisingly, the mobile installment of the remastered GTA trilogy is, for the moment, a better option for embracing these legendary classics than playing them on PC or consoles. In the network there are appeared first voices that it would be good for them to soon receive a proper update containing a "classic lighting" mode (so far it could be done unofficially, through mods). Perhaps then The Definitive Edition would return to favor. After all, climate is what the community appreciates - just look at the fan reactions.

Let us know what you think of the changes and if you plan to play. I, for one, am probably tempted to do so.
