Sony Shuts Down Unofficial PS5 Case Panels

It will be long before we can buy a black case for PS5. The unofficial panel maker is shutting down the business after Sony threatened the company with a lawsuit.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. A few days ago the sale of unofficial faceplates for PS5 was launched.
  2. Sony didn't like this business and the corporation's lawyers led to the closure of the seller's website.

Sony has taken out the sellers of unofficial PS5 faceplates. Shortly after the pre-orders for replacements went live, the company received a letter from Sony's lawyers reporting an intellectual property infringement.

The sales took place via PlateStation5.com. The receiving the letter, it was renamed to CustomizeMyPlates.com, but this also proved to be not enough. The threat of a lawsuit forced the company to cancel all pre-orders, return money to customers and cease further operations.

Replacement faceplate manufacturer was convinced that the patent filed by Sony did not cover the panels that are part of PlayStation 5's case. They were badly mistaken, as the Japanese Corporation's lawyers made them aware.

“Before we launched, we did our due diligence and were of the opinion, that because Sony only had pending patents on the faceplates there would be no problem. But after only a day of our website being live, Sony’s lawyers asked us to change our name (at the time PlateStation5), due to trademark infringements. We thought this switch would be enough to keep everyone happy, and honestly were hoping so since we were already underway with our product development. But then Sony’s lawyers told us it was their opinion, Sony’s intellectual property extended to the faceplates, and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court.”

And so the pre-orders are canceled, money is returned to customers, and the company behind this idea has gained new knowledge of copyright, patents and the actions of large corporations that defend their products like a lion. All they can do now is to sell the console stickers, which are pretty much the only thing available on the website.
