Steam Deck's Competitors Rising; Razer Prepares Its Own 'Console'

The Razer Edge 5G will be the next portable gaming device. The question is, is it more in the vein of Steam Deck or the recently revealed Logitech G?

The success of Steam Deck has caused more and more manufacturers to dream of their own portable "not-a-console-at-all." We already know, among others, about a device from Razer (tested by selected websites last year), and on October 15 at RazerCon trade show we will learn more about the Razer Edge 5G, as the portable gaming device from the well-known manufacturer is to be called.

Funnily enough, the announcement was not made by Razer or even Qualcomm (which developed the processor used in the Razer Edge 5G). The name and date of the device's presentation was revealed by Verizon, a US telecommunications provider. The company is expected to be present at this year's RazerCon event.

Verizon's announcement reveals nothing new about the console's features. What we do know is that Razer Edge 5G will make use of the Android OS and will enable the users to play not only installed games, but also in the cloud, using 5G and WiFi 6E networks.

The device is expected to offer high performance, including through the use of the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 processor. It includes, among other things, the Ardeno GPU, which is expected to support 4K resolution and allow for gaming at 144 frames per second. However, we still don't know the full specs of this chip, not to mention the power of other yet-to-be-disclosed Razer Edge 5G components (IGN's video from 2021 revealed, among others, the 6.65-inch OLED screen).

So it's hard to judge whether, in terms of performance, the device will really be able to compete with Steam Deck, or rather with Logitech G Cloud, whose creators have put all their focus on game streaming. We will learn the details on October 15, perhaps - let's hope - also with the release date of Razer Edge 5G.
