One to rule them all
From the very first moments of the first episode of Stranger Things we have no doubt that the boys are fans of fantasy. Demogorgon, the opponent that appears in their session of Dungeons & Dragons, ultimately becomes the source of the name they give to the monster that searches for Will. Officially, Demogorgon is the most powerful villain described in the first edition of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons manual. He is the dark prince of the abyss who rules the ever-changing reality of chaos.
The boys are not limited only to Dungeons and Dragons – they are also interested in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. They call the forest near Hawkins the Mirkwood, which is a reference to The Lord of The Rings. Moreover, the password to Will's hiding place is "Radagast" – that was the name of one of the wizards living in Middle-earth during the War for the Ring.
Earthsea
In one scene of the third season of the series, Suzie reads A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin, one of the most popular fantasy authors in history. Also, Suzie tells Dustin about the events in the book. What is interesting, however, is that in Le Guin's work we will find... The title of the series. Her poem Initiation Song from the Finders' Lodge begins with words: "Please bring strange things. Please come bringing new things”.
Jaws
Stranger Things also gets a lot inspiration from Steven Spielberg's Jaws, especially in the third season. Both in the film and in the latest episodes of the series, the action takes place around Independence Day, a holiday that is celebrated in the United States on the 4th of July (which is also the reason why it was chosen as the premiere date of this season). In Jaws there is a mayor who underestimates the shark's attacks and does not want them to affect the planned celebrations and his career – the mayor of Hawkins behaves in a similar way, trying to diminish the influence of the shopping center on local shops.
That's not the end of connections. At some point we see a drunk Hopper taking a bottle of alcohol out of a restaurant and saying that he can do whatever he wants because he is the chief of local police department. A similar sentence was said in Jaws by a hero played by Roy Scheider. The uniforms and vehicles used by the police in Hawkins are identical to those seen in the first two parts of the bloodthirsty shark films.
