The game is a mixture of a two-dimensional top-down shooter and a sneaky shooter. As a Mexican fugitive, we travel through the Wild West to Texas, dealing with everyone who stands in our way. The title transfers weapons from the epoch to the game in a rather detailed way, requiring from the player a quick reaction and an accurate eye. Each shot can be fatal, and a lonely revolver often has to face the overwhelming forces of the enemy.

12 is Better Than 6 is a dynamic 2D shooter with stealth elements. The game was developed by a small Russian studio Ink Stains Games. Interestingly, the name derives from the saying "better to be judged by 12 men than carried by 6". It refers to the number of jury members in American courts and the six people who carry the coffin at the funeral.

Story

Hot summer of 1873. The prisoner is thinking about the route he will have to follow to get from his hometown of Mexico to faraway Texas. The road leads through Austin, San Antonio, Albuquerque, and Houston. Rundown saloons, breathtaking cities, expensive cabarets, Indian lands, caravans... All that awaits him everywhere is scoffing, unfriendly faces, suspicions, bounty hunters and swarms of hot lead. However, he does not intend to remain indebted to anyone, and his hand is extremely fast. One thing is sure: they will not take him alive.

The main pros of the game

  • Art Style: The hand-drawn, monochromatic aesthetic with splashes of red is frequently praised for its charm and uniqueness, reminiscent of comic book art.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The one-shot kill mechanic adds intensity to the gameplay, requiring players to be strategic. The gunplay, which involves manually cocking weapons, is seen as engaging and adds a layer of realism.
  • Fun Factor: Many players find the game enjoyable and fun, especially if they appreciate fast-paced, top-down shooters similar to *Hotline Miami*. The game is noted for its chaotic shootouts and stealth elements.
  • Soundtrack: The music is generally well-received, fitting the Wild West theme and enhancing the atmosphere of the game.
  • Short Playtime: The game is relatively short (around 4-10 hours), making it accessible for players looking for a quick gaming experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Clunky Controls: Many reviews mention that the controls can feel awkward or unresponsive, particularly the aiming and reloading mechanics. The requirement to manually cock weapons can lead to frustration.
  • AI and Difficulty Issues: The enemy AI is described as inconsistent, with some enemies being either overly accurate or frustratingly dumb. This can lead to unfair gameplay experiences, particularly in terms of difficulty spikes.
  • Repetitiveness: Some players feel the gameplay can become repetitive over longer play sessions, as the mechanics and level designs don’t offer enough variety.
  • Bugs and Technical Issues: There are reports of crashes, bugs, and issues with saving progress, which can detract from the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved AI: Players desire more varied and intelligent enemy behaviors, as the current AI can often feel simplistic or unbalanced.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions for better controls, more intuitive mechanics, and options for remapping keys have been mentioned. Additionally, a proper save system that prevents loss of progress would be beneficial.
  • Story Depth: While the game has a basic narrative, many players feel it lacks depth and could benefit from a more engaging storyline and character development.
  • Visual Clarity: Some users noted that the art style can make it difficult to distinguish between enemies and the environment, leading to confusion during gameplay.

Summary

  • Overall, while 12 is Better Than 6 has its charm and enjoyable aspects, it also has notable flaws that affect the gameplay experience. Players looking for a quick, stylistic shooter may find it worth trying, especially during sales, but should be aware of its limitations.
