A two-dimensional action-adventure horror game. The title was developed by a Russian studio BSK Games and tells the story of an explorer of the depths, doctor Bailey, who faces a threat of dying when his ship malfunctions. The player controls ATMA, a drone that shows the scientist where he should go.
Anoxemia is an action-adventure game that takes place in the underwater depths. The title was released on PC and XONE and it is the first game developed by Russian studio BSK Games.
In the game the player assumes the role of Doctor Bailey, a researcher who explores the depths. Together with ATMA, his drone, the protagonist starts another trip in order to collect new samples. Not everything goes as planned – the ship malfunctions after the protagonist leaves it. The lost communication and quickly dropping oxygen supplies puts Bailey in a tough spot. The only thing he can do is go deeper into the ocean with his drone and look for a solution. Sadly, his drone acts weirdly as well, as if someone is sabotaging the actions of the protagonist.
While playing Anoxemia for PC and XONE, the player controls the drone that is followed by Doctor Bailey. During the exploration of 38 underwater locations the player looks for research samples hidden in inaccessible depths and sea caves. There are many dangers in the waters, including strong currents, mines that remained after a war and weird machines. Frequently the player will also face complicated riddles that require both thinking and fast reflexes. The drone can be upgraded with found items and equipped with new, useful functions.
Anoxemia for PC and XONE lacks spectacular battles with enemies. The characteristic tune of the gameplay is built by graphics, the atmosphere of loneliness and the threat of losing oxygen. The horror atmosphere is also strengthened by sudden glimpses of light and far noises. The graphics, similarly to the ones in the cult game Limbo, consist of dark, usually black and white locations and various shades of a pastel-like background. During the game the player is accompanied by a voice of a narrator who enables the player to understand the thoughts of the protagonist.

From encouraging beginnings, Anoxemia only continues to deteriorate minute by minute. Strong controls only become weaker and the gameplay only matches this decline. It feels as if every effort was made to curtail the early embrace of exploration and discovery. Even the resource management becomes an uncomfortable routine. The early signs of promise show a studio that had genuine ideas of capturing the mirk beneath the seas, but ultimately there just isn't enough to stop Anoxemia from being dragged to the depths below.
