A survival adventure game about expanding a base in the Arctic. Arctico was created by two independent developers and focuses on a quiet, relaxing experience for one or two people.
Arctico is an adventure game with survival and economy elements, in which as the head of a base in the Arctic we explore this frozen area and conduct various experiments. It was developed by two independent developers, Claudio Norori and Antonio Vargas.
The game does not have a typical storyline. It is limited only to providing information defining the main character's goal and to giving the history of the places he explores. As a freshly graduated researcher, he has to develop a base in the Arctic in order to save the work done there by his mentor. While exploring the available locations, he also learns about the fate of the pioneers who explored the area long ago.
In the game we observe part of the events from first person perspective and part from the third person perspective. We move around the open map in several ways: on foot (FPP), by dog sled and by canoe (TPP). The available terrain is full of locations which are the remains of other people who used the Arctic for research, fishing or obtaining resources. Depending on the nature of the place, we can find other materials to develop our base. Interesting points we have to scan with a special "gun" - when we do that, items appear on the surface, which, after collecting, go to the protagonist's inventory. A special compass or a pointer placed in the "gun" helps us in searching for them, calculating the distance to the interesting find. From time to time we'll also have to solve logical environmental puzzles, blocking access to extremely valuable items. We also have a lot of cards and notes to collect which describe the fate of people exploring the area before us.
The second pillar of the game next to exploration is the base expansion. Acquired resources allow us to construct new equipment, such as heaters, generators or places for new seedlings, so we are able to conduct our experiments. In addition to purely practical applications, some objects play a purely visual role, such as the flag flying over the complex, the color of which we can choose ourselves.
Arctico offers two game modes: single player and online co-op for two.
It features a simple graphics design, without any details or ornaments. The same goes for the animations - they visually only show the activities that our hero undertakes.
