MMO game from Australian studio Fluffy Kitten, set in science-fiction world and combining features of economic strategy game and space simulator. It takes place in the far future, in which civilization is coming to its end due to a great financial crisis, and the players, as its last living members, try to restore the ruined planet.
Ascent: The Space Game is an expanded MMO game, combining the features of a space simulator and economic strategy. Its author is an independent Australian studio Fluffy Kitten. In the early version the game was available from a web browser. As it grows, a stand-alone client was created for PC and Mac users.
The action of the game takes place in the future, in which civilization is close to a complete collapse. It all began with a great financial crisis, which first led to the collapse of large corporations, and later of entire planetary and interplanetary governments. People lost their savings, jobs, homes, crime started to flourish with time, and the bustling cities slowly ravaged. Communication systems collapsed and soon only a fraction of the population remained in contact with each other. This group will include players whose task is to prevent the irreversible collapse of human civilization and to rebuild a ruined planet.
When entering the game, we choose one of the two available options of fun, which is more suited to our preferences. The first one is designed for players who like dynamic PvE clashes. They play the role of recruits appointed by the United Nations Joint Armies (UNCA) to defend themselves against star pirates. The second mode of play is oriented towards strategy and trade, and its aim is to rebuild the economic system and restore the old order on Earth. Regardless of which of the game modes we take part in, the final success will depend on the close cooperation of both groups of players.
Ascent: The Space Game draws inspiration from both classic Wing Commander-like space-sims and contemporary space MMO games such as EVE Online. We will find in it a dynamic struggle in space, waged in real time by different models of ships, representing different classes. Production, however, also surprises with the vast range of possibilities characteristic of typical economic strategies. Players can explore and colonize the surface of planets, asteroids and gas giants, and the fun is not only about expanding the base, but also cultivation, exploitation, trade and development of new technologies. The complexity of the game makes it more dedicated to experienced players than to those who are just beginning their adventure with the MMO.
In the technical layer, Ascent uses the popular multiplatform Unity motor, which, although not overwhelming with luminaire quality, is characterized by high flexibility and universality. The advantage of the game are also relatively low hardware requirements, allowing to run the client even on an average notebook. The production is distributed in the freemium model, which means completely free access at the basic level. Buying a special subscription, however, gives us access to many unique possibilities, unavailable to ordinary users.
