Atelier series was started in 1997. Since then, its development has been mainly handled by the Japanese studio Gust. Over the years, a number of sub-series have been created within its scope, one of which is Atelier Resleriana, the second installment of which is the jRPG described here, titled Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian.

Gameplay

In Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP).

Returning home

The game takes us to the fantasy-themed continent of Lantarna. We play as two heroes who, after a mysterious disaster struck the city of Hallfein years ago, were banished from it. Now the protagonists are returning home to participate in its reconstruction, as well as to learn the truth about the events that took place here in the past. As they progress, other characters join them, who are guided by similar goals.

Dungeons and turn-based battles

The continent of Lantarna is filled with procedurally generated dungeons called Dimensional Paths. While exploring them, we must face the challenges prepared for us, as well as confront our opponents. We engage in turn-based fights with enemies, positioning our characters in two lines, utilizing their unique abilities, and also linking their attacks into combinations.

Synthesis and reconstruction of the city

The dungeons we visit hide valuable ingredients, which we then use in the synthesis process, allowing us to create items. The results depend on what Gift Colors we will combine with each other, as well as what ingredients we will use.

With Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian, Gust has returned to its roots with a title that feels like a perfect blend of the older Atelier games with many modern features. The game looks and plays amazing, boasting a heartfelt story, excellent new game mechanics, and an engaging battle system.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and the White Guardian is a truly fantastic game. It simultaneously takes the game design back a step, but in doing so, comes out as a far stronger experience than it might have had if it aimed too high. The turn-based combat and tweaks to other returning systems mean that there is a lack of nuance and technique to master, and it’s satisfying to do so. While it’s a shame players likely won’t see the previous game’s story, now that it’s offline, this is a brilliant new Atelier adventure with a mature narrative and characters.

Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Ethan Zack

Between a restrained scope and structure that harkens back to the Atelier games of old, a bevvy of fresh gameplay twists to call its own, and a metric ton of fanservice for veterans, Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian feels like a triumphant celebration of the entire series' legacy.More importantly, it's just a really great RPG experience. Appropriately, it mixes together a bunch of quality ingredients - a heartwarming narrative, strategic and dynamic turn-based combat, complex crafting systems - and synthesises them into a jolly little romp of an adventure. There's certainly a bump in the road or two, but the ride is too enjoyable to linger on those for long.
