Black Knight Sword, released on PS3 and X360, is a project by Grasshopper Manufacture studio known from Shadows of the Damned and No More Heroes.

Plot

The title combines in an original way the classic gameplay mechanisms known from traditional 2D platformers with an innovative way of telling stories and stylish audiovisual setting. Black Knight Sword is set in fairy-tale fantasy land, where one of the kingdoms found itself under the bloody rule of a new dictator. We play the role of the titular Black Knight and our task is to free the state from the oppressing ruler. Although the outline of the plot seems to resemble hundreds of similar fairy tales, the creators were tempted to be a bit original - our opponent is a young, beautiful princess, which is the complete opposite of the archetype embodying the evil tyrant, as we know from books for the youngest.

Mechanics

In terms of mechanics, the game resembles the classic 2D arcade games, where the main goal is to fight hordes of enemies. On our way, however, we come across large pages reminiscent of those found in medieval books, "telling" the story in which we participate. The game's setting resembles a theatrical scene. The latter is a reference to the style of Japanese puppet theatres. Black Knight Sword puts great emphasis on narration and storyline - the ambition of the creators was to make the game something more than just a collection of unrelated levels.

Technical aspects

Although Black Knight Sword does not use the latest technology and its graphics differ from the titles occupying the top charts, it has its charm. All thanks to the stylistics and colorful backgrounds, mixing the artistic traditions of Europe and the Far East accompanying us during the game.
