Old Time Hockey for XONE, PC and PS4 is a sports game offering an arcade approach to ice hockey. V7 Entertainment, a small Canadian studio responsible for a number of titles, including Glimpse, Esoterica America, and a mobile English Pup, developed the game.
As could be expected, the game doesn’t offer any extensive singleplayer modes. We are offered a fictional Bush League, a 1970’s hockey league offering a more brutal and fun-oriented version of the sport, as the players enter the field with without headgear and often resort to fist fighting in order to settle their differences.
Old Time Hockey shouldn’t be compared to the flagship hockey games such as NHL or NHL 2K, as the developers decided to create an arcade game without any simulation elements. The game offers control schemes based on 2 – 3 buttons, as well as the Beer Mode – a mode for less invested players that offers a handy control scheme limiting itself to only one hand, freeing the player to use the other hand at will.
The game contains two primary modes – Story Mode and Exhibition Game. The former offers the ability to lead a chosen team throughout the whole season, while the latter sees us take part in single games against the AI or through couch-based multiplayer for up to four players.
Old Time Hockey is an independent game with average visuals that are unable to stand against other popular hockey titles. Nevertheless, the cartoon style should appeal to most players, considering that the game offers couch-based multiplayer experience.
