Real-time strategy games (RTSs) most often throw us into the middle of a conflict between two (or more) more or less symmetrical sides. Calyx from independent British team Studio 568 takes a different approach.
The title lets us take on the role of the sole surviving crew member of the Avaris Corporation's g?rship and takes us to the surface of a barren planet. Working with an obsolete AI, here we command technologically advanced units and face the plant mass spreading across the surface of the globe.
In Calyx we view the action from a bird's eye view. The production places three main tasks on our shoulders, consisting of mining ore and sending it to orbit in exchange for credits, protecting the mining outpost from the unusual enemy described above, and managing energy so that it is not lacking where it is needed most at any given time.
In order to fulfill our responsibilities, we need to select a suitable site for a base, create an energy network, harness the harvesters and take care of refining the ore and transporting it. As we progress, we gain access to rare ore, which results not only in an increase in our account income, but also in a wider range of mining and military capabilities. The latter is possible, among other things, thanks to additional buildings, which are also unlocked over time.
When dealing with g?rnery, we should not forget about defense issues. The basic way to repel Calyx attacks is to build walls and turrets. In addition, we can take the initiative and, using tanks and artillery, conduct defensive operations and attack plants before they have time to grow.
As we progress, we gain not only credits that allow us to build and purchase units, but also research points. Combined with data archives, whose security we must take care of, these allow us to discover new technologies and, consequently, more and more advanced constructions. Among them, we will find, among other things, workshops producing multi-tower tanks called Goliaths, as well as upgrades that allow the latter to fly.
It is also significant that , scanning the roots of Calyx, we learn more and more about this strange life form. In addition, step by step we learn the secrets of our principals - the Avaris Corporation.
A story campaign and skirmish mode have been implemented in Calyx, where we adjust the rules of each game to our individual preferences (choosing the map, setting the difficulty level, and deciding, among other things, on the starting resources or the number of available ore deposits). The production allows you to share the "seeds" of each skirmish with other players.
