In 1997, the studio Stainless Games released Carmageddon - a brutal racing game where the fight for the finish line was as important as eliminating opponents and bloodily running over pedestrians. This controversial title was successful enough to start a series that was developed until 2000, when its third installment was released. The series then disappeared for fifteen years, but in the second decade of the 21st century, it was resurrected and saw two more installments (and one spin-off). In December 2018, the rights to the brand were acquired by THQ Nordic, but the announcement of the sixth main installment of the series took another 7 years.

Games Freezer: 7.5 / 10 by Britt Roberts

As much as I enjoyed my time with Carmageddon Rogue Shift and I applaud the decision to streamline the formula – the lack of any sort of multiplayer is a real shame, and also, whilst Max Damage’s iconic car is a main feature, the lack of a goofy parade of the previous characters and cars in this new, more grim-faced iteration does strip the game of a lot of its historical identity, feeling a little generic ‘blood ‘n metal’ with a lack of humour in the game. That said, it all boils down to a very playable single player experience, with all the heft and weight you’d expect from a racing game in this genre, which I’m completely on board with.

Carmageddon is back, reborn as a roguelike racer with heaps of car combat. The core gameplay is fun, but Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is ultimately let down by its near non-existent event variety.

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is neither the last game in the series nor a completely new game. There is a big experiment going on here that sometimes fails but mostly succeeds in being exciting, tense, and damaging without any qualms.

The main cons of the game

  • Poor Handling and Driving Mechanics: A significant number of players criticize the car handling, describing it as sluggish, floaty, or unresponsive, which detracts from the racing experience.
  • Limited Track Design: Many reviews mention that the tracks are too linear or dull, lacking the open-world exploration and chaotic freedom that characterized earlier *Carmageddon* titles.
  • AI Issues: The AI is often perceived as inconsistent, either being too easy to beat or behaving in a way that disrupts the racing experience.
  • High Price Point: Several users feel that the game is overpriced for the content it currently offers, suggesting it should be sold at a lower price.

Summary

  • Overall, while *Carmageddon: Rogue Shift* has its fans who enjoy its fresh take on the franchise with roguelite mechanics, it also faces significant criticism from those who long for the chaotic, open-world destruction of the original games. The handling issues and lack of multiplayer are particularly highlighted as major drawbacks.
