Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe for PC and PS4 is a 2D fighting game created by FK Digital – a Taiwanese developer. In this game, which was originally created solely for arcade machines, the player can choose from 16 fighters with different appearances, skills and styles. Fighting was divided here into many different game modes encompassing competition both against the AI-controlled opponents and other players, either on-line, or in split-screen.

Plot

The game tells an alternative version of history. Arthur Tesla discovered a new source of energy – Chaotics. This allowed humanity to make a great progress, as the problems of deficient energy or the energy being unstable had been dealt with. Howver, many dangers for mankind followed as well. Having discovered this, Tesla created a puzzle called the Chaos Code and hid himself from the eyes of the world. Nobody is sure as to what the puzzle actually is, but it certainly can reward one with power and control. Numerous organizations want to put their hands on the Chaos Code, which creates room for tough competition.

Mechanics

Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe for PC and PS4 is a 2D fighting game based on classic patterns. The characters move in two dimensions and fight using more or less advanced techniques. The basic attacks are divided into light and heavy punches and kicks. The system was complemented by the ability to jump, parry, and dash quickly towards an opponent. Also, the player can grab and throw the enemies. Through mingling light and heavy attacks together, one can create combos that deal more damage. The Chaos meter, which is divided into three segments, also plays a significant part in combat; the player refills the meter when dealing damage to opponents. The meter allows the player to make use of advanced techniques, that depending on the level can drain even up to all the Chaos gathered on the meter. The Chaos gathered also has a defensive purpose, as it makes the player capable of interrupting special attacks when the enemies are launching them.

What is important in the game as well, is character modification. Having chosen one of the 16 fighters available, the player also chooses two from four techniques unique for this character. Moreover, one can change the color of the fighter's outfit.

Game modes

One's fighting skills can be tested in seven game modes. In the Arcade Mode, the player gets acquainted with the story of the character chosen - the player fights subsequent duels and watches cut-scenes. The Survival Mode offers an opportunity to fight a series of duels that ends with the player's failure. The Score Attack Mode requires the player to score as many points as they can; the results can be shared in on-line rankings. In the Mission Mode, the player can achieve victory only through compliance with the specific terms of victory, such as a necessity to use one type of attack only in order to harm the opponent. The VS Mode allows the player to choose any character and fight against the AI or another player. The Practice Mode takes the player to an arena, where they can improve their skills, learn the enemies' moves, and get a better understanding of this entire system offered by the creators. In the Network Mode, one can compete against other players on-line.

Technical aspects

Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe for PC and PS4 offers aesthetic, 2D graphics reminiscent of games such as The King of Fighters XIII or BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. The visuals are filled with colors, visible especially when performing special attacks, enhanced by numerous beams, explosions, and other lighting effects.
