A city builder strategy game, serving as the third installment of a series created by Andy Sztark. Citystate Metropolis stands out from most other games of this type thanks to the option to build gridless zones and achieve a population of over one million inhabitants.
In 2018, independent developer Andy Sztark released Citystate - a city builder inspired by the classics of the genre. It was so warmly received that two years later it received a sequel in the form of Citystate II. Citystate Metropolis described here is the third part of this series.
At first glance, Citystate Metropolis doesn't look much different from what we're used to in other city-building strategy games. We observe the action from a bird's eye view and during the game we build a prosperous metropolis from scratch. We are responsible for all aspects of its functioning - from laying out roads and designating zones to setting laws (including building and tax regulations). It is up to us whether we create an ecological oasis, a capitalist powerhouse, or a city of the future.
This entry in the series stands out from other titles of this type due to several unique elements. The most important of them is the option to build districts of any shape and type, without having to look at the grid.
The buildings, on the other hand, are procedurally generated. The game includes tools that give us control over their sizes, outlines, shapes, colors, as well as the number of floors and parking spaces. This applies to residential, commercial, industrial, and service buildings alike. Additionally, it is up to us whether the buildings will be extravagant and economical (which increases land value and attracts investors) or simple and cheap (which, in turn, stimulates social mobility).
The game also implements a crowd-based model, allowing for a population exceeding one million inhabitants (which traditional agent-based simulators cannot handle), as well as simulates diverse socio-economic factors or even the consequences of the building regulations we establish.
In addition, there is a map editor that combines procedural generation and real-world data. The developers also prepared a dynamic water simulation, which allows for the creation of rivers and lakes.
