Cloudheim is a game developed by Noodle Cat Games. They are a small but experienced studio with team members who have previously worked on franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Fortnite. Their game tells the story of rebuilding the world after Ragnarok, focusing on gods, engineers, and warriors who choose hammer and steel over prayer. Either working solo or in a team, we explore floating islands, create new weapons, and fight to restore balance to the world.

Gameplay

In Cloudheim the action is viewed from a third-person perspective. We take on the role of warrior-craftsman traversing a world shattered by the catastrophe known as Ragnarok. Each mission begins aboard a flying base called Odin Shell, which serves as a workshop and command center. From there, the team embarks on expeditions to floating islands and ruins of ancient lands, which act as dungeons.

  • Visual Appeal: The game features a vibrant and colorful art style, reminiscent of titles like Breath of the Wild and Genshin Impact. The graphics are praised for their detail and aesthetic.

The main cons of the game

  • Progression Issues: A significant drawback is that character progression is tied to the host's world. If a player joins a friend's game, they cannot carry over their progress to their own world, which can be frustrating.
  • Combat Clunkiness: Some players feel that the combat can be floaty or unsatisfactory at times, with issues regarding hit detection and attack responsiveness. The chaotic nature of battles can lead to confusion.
  • Limited Customization: Players have noted that character customization is minimal, with characters primarily serving as skins rather than offering significant gameplay differences.

  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some users have expressed concerns about the repetitive nature of quests and gameplay loops, noting that the lack of deeper mechanics can lead to a sense of monotony over time.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Shared Progression: Many players desire a system that allows for shared progression across different games or worlds, enabling them to play with various friends without losing their character development.
  • Deeper Combat Mechanics: Users have suggested the need for more strategic depth in combat, such as the introduction of lock-on targeting or more varied attack animations.
  • Expanded Crafting Options: While the current crafting system is streamlined, some players would like to see more complexity and variety in crafting recipes and item management.
  • Story and Lore Development: A more engaging narrative and lore would enhance the game experience, as many players feel the story is currently lacking depth.
  • Performance Optimization: Players have noted the need for better optimization and the inclusion of modern graphics technologies like DLSS or FSR to improve performance.

Conclusion

  • Cloudheim has garnered a mix of positive and critical feedback, showcasing its potential as a fun and engaging action-adventure game. While it excels in combat, visuals, and cooperative play, it faces challenges with progression systems, combat mechanics, and technical issues. As an early access title, the game's future improvements and updates will be crucial in addressing player concerns and enhancing the overall experience.
