A free-to-play survival game with a third-person camera view, set in a fantasy version of the golden age of piracy. Crosswind supports both singleplayer & multiplayer, allowing us to travel across waters and lands, participate in ship battles, engage in sword & ranged combat, as well as build and craft gear.
The golden age of piracy, enriched with fantasy elements, is an attractive theme for a survival action game. This conclusion was reached by developers from the independent studio Crosswind Crew from Uzbekistan, who created the game Crosswind, distributed in a free-to-play model with microtransactions. Their work allows us to embody a mercenary captain, whose path to revenge leads right into the middle of a war between empires, pirate clans, and powerful dark forces.
In Crosswind we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP).
When on dry land, we mainly focus on exploration, getting to know the inhabitants of the game world, performing quests, and also fighting opponents. Apart from regular enemies, much more powerful bosses stand in our way. We need to deal with both humans and fantasy creatures.
The fights are dynamic and reminiscent of the soulslike genre, forcing us to observe the movements of our opponents and look out for their weak points and gaps in defense, as well as efficiently parrying attacks and launching counterattacks. We use melee weapons and firearms (black powder) on the battlefield.
This is not the end, as the game also features building and crafting systems, which are based on the resources we collect along the way. Production allows us to build our base from scratch (and then gradually expand it) and to use the crafting mechanics to create items. We can produce weapons this way, but also brew potions or prepare meals. There is also no shortage of trading opportunities here.
As befits a pirate tale, Crosswind also allows us to explore the open waters. We travel using our ship - from a cutter, through a frigate, to a galleon - whose crew we recruit as we progress.
The game allows us to engage in naval battles, during which success is ensured by accurate cannon fire and taking the right position in relation to the adversary. Its culmination can be a boarding, during which we come face to face with members of the enemy crew. There is also nothing standing in the way of attacking coastal forts.
It is possible to play Crosswind alone or in multiplayer mode over the Internet. The game allows for both cooperation and competition with other players.
