Sea of Thieves is an open world MMO game played in typically pirate climates. The title was created by the legendary Rare studio, one of the oldest British developers, with such famous series as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie and Killer Instinct. After the acquisition of the studio by Microsoft, its star has faded a little, and in recent years it has become known mainly thanks to the Kinect Sports series created for the giant from Redmond. Sea of Thieves was announced at E3 2015 and was released less than two years later, on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
In Sea of Thieves players play the role of buccaneers and engage in various pirate activities, swimming in the seas and oceans, searching for treasures and fighting monsters and other pirates. The game has no ambition to be a deadly serious production, and life under the black flag has been treated with a tongue in cheek.
The action of the game is set in an open world, where we can move freely, both on foot and on ships, and the events are shown from the player's eyes. The game has a sandbox character and does not set a specific goal for the participants. While playing, we can concentrate on various main and side activities, performing missions for a selected faction. The basis of the game are joint expeditions of players and ship management, during which each member of the crew is responsible for different tasks, e.g. controlling the rudder, unwinding and reeling the sails or raising and lowering the anchor. Exploration also often involves battles between competing crews, where there is a similar division of duties. Here, however, it is additionally necessary to service the ship's cannons and repair possible damage to the ship, so that it does not get water and does not sink. In their free time, pirates can indulge in various pleasures, drinking grog or playing various pirate chants.
As befits an MMO game, Sea of Thieves is designed exclusively for multiplayer fun, but in the open game world we occasionally come across other people. The whole thing puts a lot of emphasis on playing in cooperation mode, and the players combine in teams working together on different levels, such as ship management, treasure hunting or fighting, while competing with other, similar groups of pirates.
Released on the PC and XONE platforms, Sea of Thieves features a refined, fully three-dimensional graphic design, a strong cartoon style and a large dose of pirate sense of humour. The game is available under the Xbox Play Anywhere program, thanks to which buying it on one of the available platforms, we receive a free version for the other platform, and in the Xbox Game Pass subscription. Achievements, gameplay progress and all additional content are synchronized between platforms via Xbox Live.
