A racing game about downhill – a variation of extreme cycling which consists of riding down steep mountain slopes. The players can represent one of three teams and fight for the best results in monthly sum-ups.
Descenders, released on PC, XONE, etc., is a racing game about downhill, which is one of the varieties of extreme mountain biking. The game was developed by RageSquid studio who worked on Action Henk.
The core of the gameplay in Descenders is riding a specially prepared bike down steep mountain slopes. The final result is determined not only by our finish time but also by the style in which we do it. Despite the arcade character of the game, it is important to maneuver the bike and balance the player's body - for example, if you want to overcome a sharp turn, you have to lean at the right angle, and before making a jump you have to move the center of gravity backward. We fight for victory in dense forests, desert areas or among the hills covered with snow. Interestingly, individual tracks are generated procedurally, which means that each ride involves completely different challenges.
However, before we start a race, we have to choose one of the three teams. Teams are differentiated according to their goals - Team Enemy focuses on the most dangerous tricks; Team Arboreal appreciates freedom and driving through the wildernesses, and Team Kinetic is committed to developing the highest possible speeds. The decision, which we make at the beginning, has an impact on our character's clothing and the equipment. It should be noted, however, that the authors didn't manage to obtain licences from manufacturers of bicycle parts - however, inspirations with cult components (like frames and shock absorbers created by leading companies) are visible at first glance.
Descenders can be played alone, although the title shows its true potential in the multiplayer mode. Thanks to it we can join forces with players from all over the world representing our team and fight against the opponents, fighting for our team's reputation and the highest possible position in the monthly summary (first place winners can count on special prizes). The production also allows for joint training within the so-called Descenders Overworld, where we can also check the world rankings and the results achieved by other downhillers.
Descenders' three-dimensional graphic design presents an average level, although the realistically animated contestants make a good impression. The game offers a dynamic soundtrack played during the races.
