Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Expansion Pack

Released

Release Date: September 23, 2016

RPG, FPP, Cyberpunk, Science Fiction, Stealth, Immersive Sim, Singleplayer

The first major story expansion for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided by Eidos Montreal. System Rift does not introduce any novelties into the gameplay mechanics, which still allows a lot of freedom of action and choice of one of several alternative ways to achieve a goal. A stealthy approach and careful observation is still the most profitable option, and awarded with numerous secret collectibles. The plot of the add-on is rich in plot twists.

Its short length and literally only one new obstacle added means that, although it’s just as fun as the main title, it’s lacking the qualities to be an amazing DLC.

A decent, but not essential, two-hour expansion for Mankind Divided that’s ultimately more of the same.

High-Def Digest: 4 / 5 by Brian Hoss

'Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - System Rift' made for a happy surprise and happy return to one of my favorite 2016 games. There is story and gameplay worth having here, but nothing radical like a full-powered Jensen or even new weapons or abilities. Somehow though, 'System Rift' does deliver on content that links the main game with 'Breach.' I'd be happy if the other big DLC, 'A Criminal Past,' can deliver as effectively.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Story: The DLC features a compelling narrative that connects players with Adam Jensen's past, particularly through the character of Pritchard, which adds nostalgia and depth.
  • Strong Stealth and Infiltration Design: Players appreciated the focus on stealth gameplay, allowing for multiple approaches to objectives and problem-solving, reminiscent of the core mechanics of the main game.
  • Compact Gameplay: The DLC is described as a self-contained mission that, while short, provides a satisfying experience for fans looking for more content after the main game.
  • Good Atmosphere and Level Design: The setting and level design were praised for offering a blend of exploration and tactical gameplay, enhancing the overall Deus Ex experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Playtime: Many reviews noted that the DLC lasts only about 2-3 hours, which some players felt was insufficient for the price.
  • Price Concerns: Users frequently mentioned that the DLC is not worth its full price, suggesting it should be purchased on sale or as part of a bundle.
  • Limited Replayability: The DLC was criticized for having minimal replay value, with some stating it felt like a side quest rather than an essential part of the narrative.
  • Lack of Connection to Main Story: Some players felt that the DLC does not significantly advance the overarching conspiracy narrative of the Deus Ex series, making it feel disconnected from the main game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Integration with Main Game: Users expressed a desire for better integration of the DLC into the main storyline, feeling that it could have been included as a side mission in the base game.
  • More Content and Features: Some reviews indicated that there was a lack of new features or significant content that would justify the price, with players wanting more substantial additions.
  • Difficulty Balance: A few reviewers mentioned that the gameplay could be trivialized with certain skills, leading to a lack of challenge, which detracted from the experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while "System Rift" offers a nostalgic and enjoyable experience for fans of the series, it is viewed as a short and somewhat overpriced addition that may not be essential unless acquired at a discount.
