An action RPG where dinosaurs fight each other using gigantic melee weapons wielded in their mouths. Dinoblade focuses on dynamic boss fights, featuring soulslike mechanics. The game's brutality is characterized by its tone, which can be limited in the game's options.
An unusual idea for a soulslike action RPG featuring dinosaur battles with melee weapons initially started as a joke by Jean Nguyen, an animator for Ghost of Yotei. Over time, the concept for Dinoblade evolved into a full-fledged indie title. It was developed by the newly formed studio Team Spino LLC.
In the game, we take on the role of a young spinosaurus who, like other reptiles, wields a colossal melee weapon in its jaws, which in this case is a giant sword. The game is presented from a third-person perspective. We travel through prehistoric biomes of a vast universe, ranging from dry canyons to dense, fog-covered jungles. Each region is ruled by an alpha male, serving as a boss guarding the passage to the next level.
Dinoblade heavily relies on mechanics known from the Souls series. To win dynamic battles, we must learn the movement patterns of opponents, precisely time our dodges, and use blocking at the right moments. As we roll around predators, we continue to grip our massive weapon in our teeth, dealing damage through combinations of slashes.
Defeated enemies drop energy that we can spend on developing the hero using skill points. By creating our own fighting style and discovering special weapon arts hidden in the lands, we are able to engage in battles with increasingly powerful predators. And not just them, as we also have to wrestle with a tail-swinging stegosaurus. Our enemies, besides swords, wield pitchforks, scythes, axes, and hammers in their jaws.
The visual design of Dinoblade is based on contrasts of light and darkness, where the darkness of the surrounding universe is illuminated by the sparks of clashing blades. The game is characterized by high brutality levels, which can be limited in the settings.
