DiRT 4 for PC, PS4 and XONE is another installment in the popular series of racing games developed by Codemasters Software. The franchise is considered the spiritual heir to the classic Colin McRae Rally series. DiRT 4 delivers an extension to the concepts its predecessors were based on, but also introduces many novelties.

Mechanics

The game offers over 50 cars and the player participates in several kinds of championships. Rallying takes place mainly in Sweden, Michigan, Wales, Spain and Australia. During the in-game events, the player drives in such classic cars as Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 or the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, but the game also features newer vehicles, most notably Ford Fiesta R5. Furthermore, the player will find the Landrush mode, which returns in this installment, giving an opportunity to drive lightweight and very maneuverable vehicles (Pro Buggy, the Pro-2 and Pro-4 class trucks, crosskarts) when competing for victory in Nevada, Mexico and California. The largest novelty introduced however, is the FIA World Rallycross Championship license, which brings a competition variant dedicated specifically for rallycross events – here, the player takes part in direct competition on tracks located in Lydden Hill, Montalegre, Hell, Holjes and Lohéac Bretagne. What complements the set of gameplay variants available, is the Joyride mode, which offers different kinds of challenges, such as time trials or those requiring the player to destroy objects for instance.

DiRT / WRC Game Series

Series DiRT is the direct successor to the series Colin McRae Rally, launched in 1998 by Codemasters. When in 2004 the series' patron Colin McRae abandoned WRC racing in favor of the Dakar Rally and the X-Games series, the developers decided to change the direction of its development, enriching the game with off-road rallies and increasing the range of available vehicles to include off-road cars, trucks and rovers. The new game also received a significant name DiRT.

God is a Geek: 9 / 10 by Gary Bailey

From the comprehensive career mode to the fun of Rallycross and Joyride, Dirt 4 is one of Codemasters' best. And it's the best rally game by quite some distance.

GamesRadar+: 3.5 / 5 by Justin Towell

Worth buying for its superb rally sim alone. But the returning racing modes are bland, frustrating and unsatisfying.

TheSixthAxis: 8 / 10 by Stefan L

In the end, Dirt Rally was just a glimpse of what was yet to come, with Dirt 4 bringing this long running series back with not just rallying, but more full-on wheel to wheel action alongside it. In going for a more focused style of game and a more demure attitude, it's lost some of Dirt 3's hyperactivity and fun, but with a limitless supply of new stages to send you car hurtling along, Dirt 4 is a rallying game for the ages.

  • Custom Stage Creation: The "Your Stage" feature enables players to generate custom rally stages, which adds significant replay value and variety to the gameplay.

  • Sound Design: The immersive audio experience, including engine sounds and co-driver pace notes, enhances the overall gameplay.
  • Visual Appeal: While not cutting-edge, the graphics are considered solid, with good atmospheric effects and detailed environments.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Track Design: Many users express dissatisfaction with the procedural track generation, finding it leads to repetitive and predictable gameplay. Some feel the tracks lack the complexity and flair of earlier entries in the series.
  • AI Behavior: The AI is described as occasionally lacking in aggression or adaptability, which can detract from the racing experience.
  • Control Issues: Some players report problems with the game forgetting wheel settings upon reboot, leading to frustration during gameplay.
  • Limited Content: Several users note a lack of variety in cars and tracks compared to previous titles, with some feeling that the game does not live up to the legacy of earlier DiRT games.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Authentic Rally Stages: Players express a desire for licensed rally stages and a broader selection of real-world tracks, such as those found in previous titles.
  • Dakar and Other Rally Types: Users miss the inclusion of Dakar vehicles and events, which were popular in earlier games.
  • Improved AI and Physics: There are calls for better AI behavior and more realistic vehicle physics, as some players find the handling to be inconsistent or unrealistic.
  • Expanded Locations: Suggestions for additional locations, such as Finland and Greece, indicate a desire for more diverse driving environments.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while DiRT 4 offers a fun and engaging rally racing experience with some innovative features, it also faces criticism for its repetitive track design, control issues, and lack of content compared to its predecessors.
