A racing game with a Japanese setting and an open world, made by the Polish developers of Drift21 (also known as DriftCE). In Drift Island we build and repair cars, operating in first-person view. We then drive them and participate in various missions and challenges, often focused on performing good drifts.
The Polish studio ECC Games made its mark in the racing game genre by releasing Drift21 in 2021 (later renamed to DriftCE). The game achieved enough success for the developer to follow up and create another project about controlled slides - although this time in a different convention, with an open world.
Drift Island is a "simcade" type game. It means that it combines authentic driving experience with easier controls, accessible to a wide range of players. Apart from driving, we spend a lot of time moving on foot (in FPP view) around locations such as our home, parts stores, used car dealerships or the workshop. That last building can be used to personally modify and repair cars, removing and installing individual parts (similar to the Car Mechanic Simulator series).
The game features unlicensed equivalents of real cars, especially Japanese models associated with the drifting scene (like the Mazda RX-7, Toyota Supra, or Infiniti G37). The open world in the game was inspired by Japan. There many places where we have the chance to show off our car control skills, such as winding mountain roads, industrial zones or specially prepared tracks.
The main goal in Drift Island is to build powerful "drift cars" to compete in professional races - this requires money, which we earn by completing various challenges and missions, such as delivering food on time. We must be careful about damaging our cars - the game includes an extensive car damage model (visual and mechanical). The vehicles must be manually repaired, depleting our budget.
Drift Island was created based on Unreal Engine 5 technology. The physics in the game are powered by ECC Games studio's proprietary GearShift engine.
