Creating a language from scratch is a complicated endeavor, so video game developers seldom decide to do it. Gerben Grave, founder of the independent Multiverse Narratives studio from the Netherlands, decided to take up the gauntlet, developing an original adventure game titled Eloquence.
In Eloquence we view events from a bird's eye view. The production takes us to an island, over whose inhabitants hangs a deadly danger in the form of an impending volcanic eruption. During the gameplay, we have to prevent the catastrophe by reaching the very top of this g?re. If we fail to do so, a mysterious force will take us to the very beginning of the adventure.
To stop the cataclysm, we traverse the island, get to know the local population, solve puzzles and uncover secrets, gradually approaching the realization of the main task.
Compared to other items of this type, the described work is distinguished by the fact that the only text we find in the game is based on the language of symbols specially created for its needs. The production allows us to save phrases and use them during conversations with NPCs. Although initially we can only memorize whole sentences, over time our linguistic skills develop, as reflected by the ability to split phrases into smaller fragments.
The progress we make in learning the language stays with us forever, so that our proficiency with symbols grows from one attempt to save the island to the next.
Eloquence 's hand-drawn graphics are maintained in a style reminiscent of a moving picture painted with watercolors.
