Shadow Within is the subtitle of the fourth part of the Endless Fables series started in 2016. As in the previous editions of the cycle, the production represents the HOPA genre and was developed by Sunward Games studio; it was released by Artifex Mundi, a Polish company specializing in this type of games.

Plot

In Endless Fables 4: Shadow Within we play the well-known anthropologist Pamela Cavendish. The protagonist returns to her hometown of Mittenwald to solve a childhood puzzle when her friend was kidnapped by a terrifying creature. Years later, however, Hans managed to make contact with his sister Agatha, and his words show that he is trapped in the mysterious world of nightmares. Trying to help her enslaved friend, Pamela must be on guard as she is followed by an enigmatic, dark figure.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Endless Fables 4: Shadow Within does not differ from what we were accustomed to by the previous versions of the cycle. Thirty-one locations are waiting to be visited here; we will find twenty-three puzzles whose solution requires the manipulation of encountered objects and the appropriate use of found objects. Apart from the main story, there is also a place for an additional adventure, allowing us to learn about the history of the Kingdom of Nightmares, where a friend of Pamela was born.

Technical aspects

Endless Fables 4: Shadow Within has colorful, two-dimensional graphics. Although it consists primarily of detailed illustrations of individual locations and objects, it also includes nicely made animations and film interludes.
