FPP horror action adventure game enriched with survival elements. Expedition Zero takes us to the Siberian taiga overrun by bloodthirsty monsters, where we fight for survival as the last surviving member of a Soviet scientific expedition.
Expedition Zero is an action adventure game, kept in the horror convention and enriched with survival elements. The game was developed by Enigmatic Machines studio, while its release was handled by tinyBuild.
Expedition Zero takes us on a journey to the Soviet Union, to be precise, to the Siberian taiga, which was turned into an exclusion zone by the fall of a large meteorite. Soon after, contact with the surrounding military bases was lost, and locals began to spread tales of bloodthirsty creatures devastating entire villages. The decision was made to send the Expedition Zero, consisting of the best Soviet scientists, to the site. Although the group was equipped with modern inventions and mechanical protective suits, the radio silence, which fell on the very first day of research, was not a good sign. You play as the last surviving member of this team, who years later is still looking for a way back home.
In Expedition Zero we observe the action from a first person perspective (FPP). During the game we explore grim, Siberian locations, among which we find abandoned and still inhabited villages, military complexes and caves. Wandering through them, we complete tasks that allow us to discover the truth about the fate of the expedition and bring us closer to finding the way home. However, this is not easy, as danger awaits you in the taiga at every corner. The protagonist is threatened not only by bloodthirsty creatures, but also extreme weather, led by frost. For this reason, we must constantly maintain the right body temperature for the scientist, provide him with the opportunity to regenerate his strength (by eating and sleeping) and maintain the appropriate level of his mental health index, which decreases when the protagonist is exposed to monsters.
As our protagonist is not a soldier, but an engineer, he copes with them by using both weapons (mainly cold ones, headed by a crowbar), as well as his own skills and cleverness. Over time, the protagonist learns to construct useful gadgets and upgrade his mechanical suit. In this way, the scientist increases his combat potential and, consequently, his chances of survival.
Expedition Zero features good quality graphics. The horror atmosphere is created both by the darkness shrouding the visited locations and by the soundtrack.

Expedition Zero manages to scare without using any jumpscares, doesn't overstay its welcome, and delivers a great creepy and atmospheric post-apocalyptic experience.

Expedition Zero is an interesting game with some good ideas and exceptional atmosphere use. Still, the positives are let down by several bugs, issues around areas of the game feeling unfinished and other frustrations. There's certainly a chance you'll have some good moments with the game, but I can only imagine these moments will be outweighed by other less fun and more annoying moments.

The atmosphere of horror is created both by the darkness that envelops the visited locations and by the soundtrack. Expedition Zero has a decent amount of positive sides, so the game can be called a representative of well-made survivalists from the budget category.
